I never shave my throat, it is too hard to swallow the blades.

Depends on what beard style you want. However, it's best to keep it somewhat trimmed so it doesn't look to messy. Especially stray hairs, like on his mole, are things you should shave.

I don't know what your friend's face looks like, but maybe he'd be better off shaving his upper cheeks, or at least trim it down so the hair fades. If you've got too much hair on your cheeks, your face will appear shorter. A thinner beards make your face longer though, so he should adjust according to his face type.

That's about all I know. I don't have a beard though, I prefer to be clean-shaven. It's a lot less work, and while some people like me with a beard, I feel that it makes me look badly groomed. Especially in combination with my pale skin.

Like the American myth that every Englishman is toothless and gay, the English have a myth that all Irish men grow a second set of eyebrows on their upper cheeks by not shaving there. It's not true, of course, but it does highlight that we see cheek-brows as a negative thing.

I'm not sure of your boyfriend's reasons but it's not something that I, or anyone I know, would do. The bristles on my neck are always the same length as the bristles on my cheek. Whatever I do, shaving-wise, gets done to both at the same time.
