Major obsession with fictional character to the point of depression

I've heard it's fairly normal to have obsessions with fictional characters, but is it normal to be so majorly obsessed that you act like them, and when reality crashes down that you can't be them you get really depressed? This has happened twice in a row for me and I'm still obsessed with each character.

The obsession itself I wouldn't call unhealthy but that fact that it depresses you and is obviously causing you distress is concerning. I apologize as I wouldn't be able to offer any advice; I myself obsess over things too but not the point of depression. I know that obsessions are not something you just get over so I certainly won't tell you to just move on but I do think it would be a good idea to talk to someone. Maybe get some counseling. Find out where this obsession derived from. Maybe there is a deep reason behind it that you are subconscious of.

I can't think of too many things in life sadder than what you just described.
There is this huge beautiful world out there filled with incredibly interesting people and you are obsessing over fictional characters? Honestly, that's just plain unhealthy.

    No. It's not normal.

Any 'major obsession to the point of depression' is abnormal, whether it be obsessing over a person, a hobby, an idea, a physical attribute and so on.

The fact that this obsession has created an unattainable aspiration, to be the personification of this fictional character, only deepens the problem, since it frustrates and depresses you.

I'd suggest shifting your interest to something real, tangible, something that has a positive impact upon your life rather than a negative one, something which doesn't trigger these unhealthy, obsessive feelings.

I've had that too. Not so much trying to be them, although I definitely understand, I've wanted to cosplay but never got to it. Or just copying some of their mannerisms, almost subconsciously, just to be reminded of them.. And yeah the depression of returning to reality where they can never exist. I find it helpful to look at and make fan art of them, though..

Maybe you should read non-fiction. It's real actual stuff.

I feel the same with fictional characters in books that I read... Why do authors create people that are so perfect? Urgh...
