Mainstream music meltdown

This isn't so much as a "Is it Normal?" As a "Why is it normal?". Because mainstream music is mainstream for a reason, no? Because everybody likes it. But I don't. Whenever I listen to a lot of mainstream artists (You know those dancy, hip hoppy, rappy kind of artists) I tend to find it really bad. And its not like I have an advanced taste in music, I can't pick up on time signatures or anything. Most of the music seems whiney, or vulgar, or just plain bad. I'm talking about artists like Britney Spears, Blink 182, Cascada, Lil Wayne, Eminem, Snoop Dog, Linkin Park, and Nickelback. I'm not out there looking to be non conformist or anything, tell the truth I started my rock music listening career in mainstream and sort of fell out. I came out of country music and into artists like Panic! at the Disco and Fall Out Boy. Now I listen to those out of nostalgia but I really think a lot of other bands out there deserve a lot more headlines. Why do people find the above mentioned artists and their bretheren so attractive? Is anybody else in my boat? Can somebody explain to me why these people are so popular? Maybe I can relook at these people and find some value.

  • I totally agree except i like eminem, well as far as rappers go he is the only one i like. But I usually like folk music some screamo i used to be the biggest screamo fan ever, TDWP, BMTH, Alesana, I Set My Friends On Fire and more but the worst thing is that Hot Topic went fucking mainstream I HATE HOT TOPIC NOW! they have justin beiber(who i hate) Lady Gaga(poser) and other rappers its horrible everyone just loves mainstream and it sucks.

It's better when music really mattered, the talent, the passion, the solos, the licks, the riffs, and those weird things some artists put on a song.
Now music is just some gay dude, voice modulations and crappy lyrics.
I'm not really old to be talking of that(15), but my music is 80s and 90s and mainstream is what poser means.
There are some bands that have been kept alive and returned to their old styles or some that made some huge comeback, Examples:
    Metallica with Death Magnetic
    Megadeth with Endgame
Ratt i don't know the name of the album
Motley Crue on 2008 with Saints of Los Angeles
    Slash made his solo album
    Bon Jovi with The Circle
Scorpions with Sting in the tail
Ozzy Osbourne(Now his music is really crappy but i still have respect) Scream
And a lot more but those who have been kept are: Slayer, Dream Theater but most of the others changed, broke up, have a new line-up(Yes I'm talking about Guns N' Roses fck you Axl) or returned to what made 'em great.
    So, i understan you.

Yeah new music is a BoD. Music died in the 90's. Except Death Magnetic. That's pretty good.

it's all a matter of taste. if you don't like a certain song, don't listen to it. and you shouldn't group all "mainstream" music together; not every mainstream song is the same. i personally think a few of those songs are pretty catchy, but others sound awful.

Like others have said, mainstream music is popular because people are told to like it. "The powers that be" force artsist down people's throats until they finally accept it. That's why they play the same songs over and over again on the radio. You ever heard a song that sucks, but for some reason you can't get it out of your head? Repetition is a powerful thing.

I should note that just because something is produced in-studio with lots of samples/electronic sounds etc. that doesn't mean it's talentless/inspirationless... some people's inspiration is channeled through sounds in their head that aren't your standard guitar/bass/drums setup. I'd be happy to list some artists like this if there's any contest. Yeah, just throwing that out there.

As far as maintstream goes, yeah, someone said it already, it's basically so popular because people are told to like it. I'd imagine it starts with an image someone liked, and with the support of whatever crap label the artist was on the popularity skyrocketed, so that the listeners feel like they in turn are acquiring that same image.

Check out the Arctic Monkeys and/or Last Shadow Puppets...it's such a relief there is still real talent out there.

I suggest not relistening to them. They're horrible and I hate all that crap rep they get. It pieces me off that they get so many fans because they sing about how their lives are amazing or horrible or whatever.

I agree with you that many "mainstream" artists are trash. To answer your question, people love these artists because they are told to love them. You see them in advertisements and plastered everywhere. You hear them on the radio and in stores, even in the elevator. We are in a sense forced to like these bubble gum performers because it makes a ton of money for other people. The artists that you mention (Brittney Spears, etc...) all have very rich companies that back them. These companies then pay radio stations for airplay, they pay to get them started and on tv and magazines (at least at first). We are no better because we buy into it. Each tabloid and TRL etc..brings us one step closer to dishing out hard cash just to see more. Really, we are duped. Besides all this, they target young people and once ten young people think something is "cool" their friends quickly follow... so naturally if 100k young people THINK that 100k young people think that a certain artist or band is cool then you have these ugly spectacles like Brittany and whosiwhatchit...

I agree that many great bands have failed to be recognized along the way. In fact many of the best bands out there remain overlooked by the "industry" simply because they didn't want to or couldn't afford to pay into the system. Also they probably don't want to change their image. You can listen to a band because you like what they stand for, and constantly seek those (un"popular" or "popular) musicians that speak to you, or you can be a lemming and follow what they tell you to follow...it's up to you. But if you think it's crap, I'd go with the gut. Good Luck and Good Listening!

    ~Peace~
