Life as a survivor

If the Earth was rendered uninhabitable in future years, but a large compound was constructed underground for the survivors of the human race; would you be happy to live there?

-There would be no animals besides animals captured for breeding to feed the colony.
-They would be dark, dank, dirty conditions built out of cement and mortar.
-Rooms would be cramped with bunk beds in every rooom; and the genders seperated.
-Music would be played just once a week through a bad quality PA system and would be at the command of the compound heirachy.
-Medical supplies would be scarce.
-Internet services would be rendered useless as most were destroyed along with the earth, plus you're 800 feet underground.
-The only entertainment would come from survivor's dogged humour in the face of adversity, and one movie screening a week on an old projector, the movie choice again the choice of the compound heirachy.
-Even if you formed a revolution and overthrew the powers that be, all it would do is give you control of the compound, as the world above is uninhabitable and the air unbreathable.

Would you live for the sake of living, even in bleak times with little hope?

I would live. Make the most of my situation. 9
I would get claustrophobic and bored and kill myself 2
I would try to form the revolution amongst survivors 5

It's not the life I want to live. But I would overthrow the idiots that are in control. Not cause I want to live in some bunker. Just cause I don't want others to control my fate. When I'm in control, I'll know if there is any way to save humanity in the near future.

If there is hope, I'll soldier through as the bunker leader.
If there is no hope, I'll enjoy the perks of being in control for a year and then go to the surface and die.

What's the point of living like a prisoner, locked up in bunkers, not having any joys of life. Also no cars?! Hell no! I'm a car guy, so cars are a must XD
One more reason to go and visit God...

Not 'life' to me, the cold dark and dank. I'd stay outside and take whatever came.

    • Thanks for commenting, always good to hear your views :) as long as you know that by staying outside would mean death.

    Why are the genders separate?

Nope, I'm too claustrophobic. Give me space or give me death.

Sounds a lot like the Metro video games...

But to answer your question, yes, I'd live.

I would form a revolution to get rid of the sadistic bastards that control me and i would eliminate them. I think this way i would have much more freedom.

Would I be happy to live in a hypothetical underground compound you purposely described as awful?

    Gee what do you think?

You get more entertainment than that in prison.

    • For some life would be enough. Never underestimate the human will to survive. So no, I don't know; but I'm assuming you would choose death. For some, as long as there's life there is hope.

If I did not make this situation undesirable, it would be too easy a question. Besides, there's nothing desirable about an uninhabitable Earth, which is the very premise of the question.

And judging by the vote count and comments so far, I think you'll find a surprising amount of people would choose to live. Human spirit and resilience is an amazing thing.

Anyway thank you for your comment and having some input.

Firsts of all, when I read this post all I could thing of is Metro 2033 for some reason, even though it was nothing like that.

Second, are the genders always separated? A lot of my friends are female and I would be devastated if I could never see them again.

Third, there may be not internet, but can we set up a system of lan-networks? I'm sure plenty of people will be bringing their laptops loaded with enough information, games, and porn to at least make some sort of low-quality information super-highway.

    • Oh cool what is Metro 2033 sounds interesting.

      2. No, only in terms of sleeping arrangements.

      3. I tried to shut a reliance on computer entertainment/functionality out of the premise. So for the purposes of the question, no.

In a post-apocalyptic Russia in the year 2033, everyone lives in metro stations, using the tunnels to travel between because the surface has radiation and awful mutated creatures (these things also find their way into the metro but not as much). The Fourth Reich neo-Nazis, Rangers of the Order para-military organisation, and the Red Line Soviets are all trying to kill each other for station control. Then to make things worse some tunnel bandits start acting up, and some new kind of mind-control mutant is here to fuck with everybody. Have fun. It was a novel with 2 sequels that spawned a video game series based off of them.

But I digress. Ya I could do it. I'm gonna miss IIN and video games and Skype though :/

I would hope there were lots of closets that you could jump into with a partner to have sex.

Any life is better than none as long as I'm not subject to torture or other terrible things.

To disagaree. I admire the value you place on life, but it's hard for me to imagine "any" life being better than no life.

The scenario the OP described makes it sound like mental/emotional abuse at least.
