Lazy relationships

First time I'm staying in hostel and some of my roommate s are just not so energized .they are never active or say anything in class when teacher ask anything. they just sit there like dead meat. most of them are'nt single they talk to their bf constantly.so is this a normal thing or is it cause they are not single.
