Last time a media product surprised you and blew you away?

My brother lent me the metal gear solid hd collection a while ago and I couldn't be bothered to play it, I've played other hd remakes of acclaimed games and found them too dated so I never bothered.

I forced myself to play snake eater, a day later after a sleepless night I sat staring at the credits completely speechless and surprisingly moved, one of the best games ever made, a cinematic and conceptual masterpiece.

When was the last time you went into something not expecting much and were blown away?

the fact that you're playing snake eater in 2014 and loving it is a testament to how brilliant the MGS series is.

As for me, a few years ago, a good friend recommended me a game called Braid. I'd never heard of it and thus googled it and thought "wth is this mario-looking crap." clearly I had always been into FPS, RPG etc and never played indie games. But I played it, and Braid has since been in my top-5 all-time favorite PC games.

Wow, you like to jump to conclusions and put words in peoples mouth huh? All I said is that I would rather experience life. I didnt say that all gamers have no life and spend all day playing games.

I said that "I like to," nothing about you. I simply stated what I like to do, that Id rather go experience life. I never said that its bad that you marathoned a game, or that you have no life for doing so.

I was looking for a PS3 game with my sister once. She saw Red Dead Redemption and insisted that I buy it. I didn't really want to because I thought it would just be another slow, boring, western game, but she really wanted it so I went ahead and bought it. Over the next few months, I realized just how wrong my initial perception of the game had been. I was utterly floored by the brilliance of the game. The depth of the characters, the rich detail in the game world, the sheer, mind-boggling choice of activities it offered me. I had unknowingly bought one of the absolute greatest games ever made, and the best I've ever played. This masterpiece actually challenged my preconceived notions of what a video game is. Because I had spent so much time playing as the main character, when the game finally drew to a close, I had this hollow, empty feeling inside me. For those few months, that game was my life. I felt like I was John Marston, roaming the countryside on my horse, hunting bears, getting into gunfights, having chariot races, etc. After a few days, I realized how lucky I had been to have gotten the chance to play a game as incredible as this. It remains, to this day, the best game I have ever played and also my personal favorite.

Most games/films disappoint me but a couple have blew me away. To name a few from past couple of years Max Payne 3 and Dredd have both been pure unadulterated fun for me.

    • I adore max payne 3, it's strange how it was critically acclaimed but was dismissed by the majority of the public with a shrug.

Incredible cinematography and visual sensibility, expertly paced, excellent noire feel, precise, smooth gameplay and a ton of fun.

A lot of people didn't like all the cutscenes but I like games that go for a. Cinematic feel plus that alone turned a slightly above average story into something special.

Excluding hybrid genre 3rd person shooters like mass effect max payne 3 is my favorite 3rd person action game

I liked dredd but I couldn't help compare it to the raid as its essentially the same premise but not as good as the raid, I feel like I was unfairly biased watching it

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed the TV show Game of Thrones. Sword and sorcery stuff isn't usually my thing at all, but I really liked watching that show with my mates. I don't think it would be fair to say I was blown away, though. It was good and I really like it, but I don't love love love it.

I don't know if I've ever been blown away by a piece of media art I didn't expect to love. Maybe an album by my favourite band, Bomb the Music Industry!, because I'd never experienced punk music that was so lo-fi before and I genuinely was (and still am) blown away by the energy and range of emotions on their records.

It was talking about videogames I think the last game that I had little to no expectations for going in and really really enjoyed the experience with Brothets: the tale of two sons

Actually fucking cried at the end of that

    *Spoiler Alert*
I bought MG5 recently and was kinda sick to my stomach after finding. That I snuck into this fucking base undetected only to find out they were raping this chick the whole time.
I decided to dispense my own justice after that...

    Explicit content man, explicit content.

If you haven't tried the Fallout series you should. I'd also recommend the Mass Effect Trilogy.
