Laid off worker is mad at company hiring after layoff

I work at a job where my hours were cut from 40 to 24 / wk. Shortly after being cut to 24 hours a wk. the company hired another part time empl. and SHE is getting more hours than I as of now. I spoke to my manager and was told that customers in retail would rather purchase clothing from a woman than a man. Is this true? I have had several ladies hit on me at work and to tell you the truth the female emplyoee actually told me that the girls seem to be attracted to me on the sales floor. this is embarrasing to me but i play along to make the customer happy. I just am not sure what to do about how my manager responds to my questions. I have a college degree and not sure if he has one? Is it normal for a manager to tell you that he feels ladies would rather purchase sporting goods from the same sex?

Having two part time employees is often cheaper for a company than one full time. (no benefits or overtime) so it's probably just a cost saving measure, don't take it personally. That being said, keep your options open and look for new work at somewhere that respects you and your education.

I see alot of businesses having very attractive female employess as a way to get some business naturally.

I think you're case is different though and maybe illegal? I thought there were laws in place to protect this sort of thing. Something worth checking out?

To add to my comment, I certainly wouldn't care either way if it was a man or a woman... especially in a sporting goods store!

Wow, that sucks! I would be PISSED! Sounds wrong to me, man. you might even be able to press charges or something against them... it's sexual discrimination in my mind. If you're a good worker, it shouldn't matter what gender you are. Good luck with this!
