Ladies, your birth control experience?

When I first got birth control it was the Depo shot and it was purely in an attempt to surpress menstruation. It actually made everything worse and I had these weird long bleeding episodes and I've been changed to the pill. The only one that works for me is Ovral, which is I think the highest dose birth control pill they still give out. Its 50mcg estrogen and 500mcg progesterone. I've been on the pill (other brands too) for 8 months and I skip the placebos so I never get withdrawal bleeding. I'm just NOW starting, and I do mean just starting, to adjust to the pills. Has anyone else ever struggled to find the right kind of BC, and if so, what are you using now? It would be nice to hear some other experiences. Oh and opinions about how harmful anyone might think it is for me to surpress menstruation will not even be read. There are reasons for not wanting to menstruate. Serious, medical reasons.

  • When I took one of my ex girl friends birth control pills I bled out of my ass for almost 2 days and my nipples got really really sore and sensitive.

Every woman is different. What works for one, cannot be guaranteed to work for another. Any story you get will be purely anecdotal. However I'm happy to comment.

I went on BC when I was about 18 because my periods were absent. I would 2 or 3 a year and they weren't terrible. I had normal cramps and average blood flow. The doctors just felt it would make life easier if I was regular. I went through about a dozen different pills and never found one that worked well.

The worst was the one that made me allergic to the sun. That was just plain stupid. they did make me regular and I only ever had mild cramping. However I often got migraines and would also have horrible mood swings. I hated the way it made me feel. Sure, the period itself wasn't a problem, but it made me hate life in general. And that's not me. I love life.

Eventually I went off of them to see what my body would do when left to its own devices. It took a while to adjust but I was done with putting extra hormones in my body. I also changed my diet and lifestyle in general and you know what. My period became regular.

So here are some tips on treating problem periods without pharmaceuticals.

Cut out processed foods, especially ones that contain soy. Soy can disrupt your hormone levels. In some cases in may help. However, as a society, we consume way too much soy cutting it out is a good place to start. Do you carry extra weight? If you do, losing 10% of your body weight will help your hormone levels adjust to a healthy balance. Same is true if you are underweight. Your diet is important. And please stop eating meat and/or dairy that are produced by injecting the animal with extra hormones. That does the body no favors. The food you consume gives you the energy to complete necessary biological functions, like sloughing off your uterine lining every 28 days or so. There are also herbs that can help. Like blue cohosh, if you have cramps, this herb will help cause uterine contractions and make the whole process more efficient. Often taken in combination with other herbs.

My favorite herb is red raspberry leaf. It is wonderful. It is believed to help strengthen the uterus as well as the pelvic muscles. And is rich in vitamins that help keep your lady bits functioning smoothly.

And get a blood test. You may be deficient in something. The whole body works together like a well oiled machine.

And honestly, I don't care what your reasons are for using BC. But there are always alternatives.

hi, dont listen to Charli.m or any man on here because they have no idea.
I have serious medical issues and I need to be on birth control even though I have my tubes tied. I have PCOS and if I dont take birth control I have horrific periods and mood swings and feel totally out of whack.
I also wrote a post about skipping placebos and from
everything Ive read and asking multiple doctors, there is no reason why you cant do it. There is no medical reason t have a 'period" I also skip the placebos because I dont want to feel horrible if I start bleeding. I would as your gyno to be safe but I know a lot of women who never take the placebos. I take Yaz (yes there are risks but there are risks with aspirin and grapefruit you know?) and I haven't felt better since Ive stopped taking placebos.

  • That does sound super annoying. Sorry, I can't reply directly to comments. It sucks nurses and doctors don't inform us of how common this side effect is when using progesterone only BC.

I had the depo shot also at one point. For five weeks I had light period leakage. It wasn't painful, it was just annoying

  • Wistfulmaiden, I'm sorry I can't click reply on my stupid phone so I hope you end up seing this comment, but I appreciate your comment SO much. You have no idea how much it means to have someone actually stand up for me and my ideas and not just critisize my choices so thank you for that. And I agree with you, there are risks to every single medicine a person takes. I mean, a person wouldn't deny chemo if they had cancer just because its harmful in other ways to your body? Most miracle drugs have hideous side effects. The more effective the drug, the more adverse the side effects are and the benefit of birth control WAY out weighs the risks in our causes hey? I'm glad someone else skips placebos like I do and realises its safe. I don't have a gynea to be honest but the doctor who prescribed me the pills said its okay to skip the placebos. As for the moron who asked why I'm obsessed with birth control, I'm not obsessed, I'm interested. Do you critisize your fucking doctor for being "obsessed" with everything medical? No, so shut up. My post did not ask for people's opinions on my interests.

You've made dozens of posts. That's why I don't understand your obsession. If you're going to get all flustered and start insulting someone over a simple question (did I abuse you in any way? No. Did I criticise your choices? No. Have you tried to belittle people who choose not to take hormonal birth control because their reasons werent up to your standards? Yes. Have I attempted to help you with some of your other questions? Yes. So maybe you should think before you fly off the handle.) then that's your problem, but you're going to find discussions are fucking difficult.

Oh and before you lay into me about the whole people choosing not to take it for whatver reason, and accuse me of being that sort of person, I do take BC for my PCOS, I just don't try and tell others they have to.

      :D
Its good to be interested in your own health.
Men have NO idea how what women go through...I once asked a boyfriend who complained that I was "bitchy" on my period "how would you like to bleed out your penis every month?" He didnt like the thought of that much.

  • Maybe you should comment on what I asked in my post next time. You could have just told me yes you take BC for PCOS, instead of calling me obsessed. After all, in my post I didn't ask for your or anyone else's opinion on what I'm interested in and choose to post about? I asked about birth control. If you don't like it, you don't have to comment :D
