Ladies: a guy smokes marijuana habitually. is he dating material?

I always see in the classifieds that women are looking for drug-free guys. Alcohol is a drug and most people are okay with that. I see little difference in the effects of alcohol and weed, from my perspective. Both alter your state of consciousness, slow you down, change your perception, etc...
So you find out someone you hardly know smokes weed. But you find him handsome and intelligent. How do you react?

I would not enter a relationship with a guy who smokes weed. Period. 208
It would depend upon how he uses it, how it affects him, etc... 262
I have no problem with guys who smoke weed. 113
I have no problem with guys who use ANY drugs. 38

Pretty much what I expected. Some people just don't understand how much of a joke getting caught with marijuana is.
I understand why a woman might think he's a screw-up, but to be afraid of the consequences of the law is just silly.
To judge someone for using weed is just too easy. It really says nothing about the individual.
I guess I can't take offense to people simply being closed-minded. Fair enough.

It's not a joke, really. Some places are lenient but in most places you WILL get arrested. Being arrested costs money and it can cause you to lose your job or be unemployable depending on the seriousness of the arrest and your job field.

Exactly. That's why many employers drug test - both pre-hiring and periodically.

        1) The employee will miss a lot of work from being arrested. And on top of that, many employers will fire you if you go to jail.

        2) Many employers see it as "If you break one law for your own personal pleasure or gain, what other laws will you break" ... not to mention if you have a job dealing with customer personal information or expensive equipment.

Yes and also for insurance reasons, which is why smoking pot will pretty much never be OK as far as jobs are concerned even if it's legalized. It's my opinion that drug testing will probably increase if legalized. No insurance company wants to pay for errors stemming from the use of any substance, legal or not.

All this freaked out talk about weed seems weird to me, having grown up in a town where kids I went to the fourth grade with prostituted themselves for heroin at 13 (I called them the suck dick for gram girls because people would always trade a gram of weed for a good time with them) of course they've been dying more these days so... Anyways!

Potheads are not bad people, neither are meth-heads for that matter: Bad people are bad people! I've met straight edge people who I might have to shoot if they came near my house, and I've met people who shoot upwards of 5 different drugs at a time who were amazing people, and the truth is, you should accept everyone!

Plus, the law isn't a worry either. Idiots get arrested for smoking pot, or for shooting coke for that matter, while intelligent people stay free and successful. It's not very hard to not go to jail: Don't come to work red-eyed and incoherent for instance. If you start messing up at work, stop getting high before work, etc.

In short, accept all people. Black, white, gay, straight, druggie, clean, christian, hindu or atheist. If you can't deal with someone just because of a life choice they make or the way they are, you'd might as well join the Klu Klux Klan right now!

Seriously? you equate choosing to not associate with drug abusers as being the same thing as say, racism or sexism?

Sure why not. Let's also stop shunning all other criminals too - child molesters, murders, spousal beaters....

I mean heaven forbid we offend them by not accepting their actions.

              /sarcasm off.

I say... if someone is offended that another refuses to accept them because of drug addiction... fine. let them be offended. I have no time to pamper thin egos.

Of course I would, I smoke myself. I wouldn't have a problem if the guy did other drugs either, as long as it's not too often or uncontrolled. But when it comes to weed, I'd be okay with my partner smoking daily.

Weed makes men last longer in bed, it makes them more expressive and it's just all around a pretty good drug. If you bar men from your panties because they smoke weed you are doing a great disservice to your vagina.

I'd actually be more comfortable with a person knowing they use/have used drugs, even if it's just weed. Especially if it's weed. my boyfriend smokes just as much as I do, so we get to smoke together which is really nice. I would be put off if a guy didn't like weed.

Why would you people care what others think about the person you like? What if you like him he likes you and everything is fine and then you found out he smokes weed, he suddenly isn't a good guy? Think about it :)

  • Is he breaking the law by buying, being in possession of, or using marijuana where he lives? If he is a scofflaw, get rid of him because it is very conceivable that if he is caught by the police and you are with him, you could be arrested too. Personally, I must confess that I found myself smitten with a few guys who disclosed their weed habit after a few dates and I broke it off with them because I do not want people around me who have criminal leanings or criminal intent of any sort. As the saying goes: "You lay down with dogs and you get up with fleas".

If it was once in a blue moon with close friends or something, I might be ok with it. Same goes for drinking. Since I neither smoke or drink I want to be able to connect on the same level of consciousness with my partner.

I respect your opinion but i have to tell yah that there many who smoke with the purpose of comprehending things better rather than get out of their minds. I know a few academics who are an example of such, and the sobriety which they display in regards to life is much more real than that of most people, independently of weather they smoke pot or not.

yes there are people who think they get smarter when they're stoned out of their mind.

That doesn't mean the sober people around them see the same thing.

I've also seen people who thought they were geniuses when they were drunk too... Yet somehow they never really magically turned into Einstein. At the most they turned into "artists", painting the inside of toilets with their stomach contents...

I agree, i am willing to bet that there are smokers who think they are smarter when they're high, as there are many that don't. Actually, those that don't represent the great majority of the smokers i know; and just as intelligence, sobriety is subject to interpretation and perception, yah know.

That doesn't mean the sober people around them see the same thing.

As to the drinking... lets agree that alcohol is a substance quite different from those found in , the effects on the subject cannot be compared appropriately, thus I say that the analogy made has little substance in itself.

Oh and Einstein could explain why the drunks don't turn into him, I'm sure the explanation is quite complex , while experience proves that it is very obvious lol.

There's a big difference between alcohol and weed. Not everyone drinks to get drunk. Weed is only taken to make you high.

And the key word is "habitually." If he toked every now and then I wouldn't care but you're saying it's a habit. I wouldn't date and alcoholic and I wouldn't date a full fledged pothead. It comes off as "hey there I really have nothing better to do with my time"

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • They're butt-heads when they're not on drugs, I wouldn't want to kiss someone with rotten breath and poor dental health, and earning enough finances to support his Weed habits would be a real bitch.

He may be a great guy, but if he needs to smoke every day, why is he doing that? It's probably an escape. Do you want to date someone who is not willing to face reality head on? I heard someone say that a guy who smoked daily, his baby was born unhealthy and deformed. I don't know if this is true, but is this guy also hurting his health?

Bottom line: it depends on what you are looking for in a partner.

If you want someone to get high and party with, by all means go right ahead.

If you want to work toward a long-term relationship with a responsible, hard working partner with an average or better income - look elsewhere.

Even if they were the exceptional "ambitious" weed smoker, there is a high (cool choice of words, huh?) probability of job loss because of drug testing. Not to mention the always present chance of legal trouble and costs.

I see what you're saying and I'm out of my comfort zone because I don't know what being high feels like. In my head, there were various levels of it, like various levels of drunkenness. And there are are various strengths of weed, like there are various strengths of alcohol.

It's a bit of a weak argument though because while some people here drink beer, some drink wine, and some drink spirits, almost everyone here who smokes weed wants the strongest stuff that is readily available.
