Kids today?

Is it normal that kids today are really rude and bratty? My friend and I recently went to the movies where we encountered the two brattiest preteen girls ever. They were very disrespectful to us when we had done nothing at all. I wanted to give them a good smack across the face but seeing as I'm of legal age that probably would've resulted in some jail time. I'm not sure if it was just them or if it is their entire generation. It really made me question whether I want kids or not.

In all honesty, I truly do believe that it started with the WWII generation. The emergence of all of these new technologies at such low prices as well as an explosion of product manufacturing later on and the dropping of food rationing made it possible for the youth as well as adults to indulge in habits of materialism, gluttony and constant idleness if not filled by some sort of hobby.

In other words, kids don't have to spend their time toiling away on a farm anymore, or taking care of the household with Mom while Dad is away at work, raising the 5-6 kids, or going to work themselves to help Dad pay the bills because his hours got cut at the factory or he became injured.

As parents felt less and less comfortable with laying responsibilities on their children (possibly due to their lack of contentment with the responsibilities laid on them during their childhood) the child's role in the house was reduced to that of your common lake-variety leech.

The fact is that in the purpose of preserving happiness which is considered to be the cornerstone of childhood, we have reduced children to meaningless leeches. The children that you have dealt with probably have no responsibilities in their homes, and thus, no purpose for living, so why the hell should they care? The same Mother that gave birth to them, plunged them into a limbo in which the only goal they could have in their lives until they finish high school and the real world punches them in the face, is to seek pleasure.

If anything, I feel bad for the affected members of our generation. To live your life for the only purpose of pleasure, sheer pleasure alone, may seem awesome, but it takes a pretty highly developed mind to live such a life without falling into that limbo.

Everything you said. Is everything I think.

Unfortunately with child labor laws and all that feminist shit I think society's pretty much down the crapper.

I'm young but I would have much rather been born in the 1840s, at least what I've read and seen from Tom Sawyer and some various articles about those times it just seems like we would have been...more responsible.

Now I'm fucked and I can't undo the damage. I swear to the God I don't believe in I'm going to bring my kids up roughly. FUQ DA PO-PO

That's not what I am conveying at all. Women should have every right to work and children should not be forced to work in factories doing jobs that are beyond their capacity.

I just think that we, as a society, need to remember where our true priorities should lie and learn that no lifestyle is without some sort of consequence and that we must ask ourselves whether we'd be able to cope with said consequences, especially when it comes to bringing innocent children into.the equation.

To some degree I must agree though. One aspect of feminism that I believe has done more harm than good is choice of mate being based solely upon love or lust when niether quality alone will feed the children that she wishes to have and the mentality that "I don't need a man". A woman may not need a man but having two parents in the household would greatly benefit the child.

Overall, though, across all genders and races in the developed world, there is a degree of selfishness we must get over if we wish to have a more successful society. It's becoming glaringly obvious that our personal desires may not be good for everyone else.

OP, you've officially become a grumpy old person. You'll be the elderly neighbour the kids torment because you always come out of your house cranky and waving a newspaper at them as though it's a weapon.

    :)

Not all kids today are bratty. Actually, most of them that I've met are really very nice. You evidently met a few bad seeds, and I'd blame the parents, not the rest of the generation.

Thank you. I hate when people judge an entire generation based on a few obnoxious kids. Every generation has had some shitty kids in it.

Thats why I was asking everyone's opinion to see if I had merely encountered a few bad apples or if it really is getting worse.

Fair enough! I think "today's kids are shittier than previous kids" is a fairly popular opinion, actually, but I think it's been popular for many generations, so… yeah.

Thank you. I,being part of the generation your talking about(yeah yeah, underage,I know) can say that there defiantly are very spoiled, bratty kids, but not all are. It all depends on how they were raised. It also depends on their personality.i tend to be content most of the time and have no problem doing chores, etc. other people whine and won't listen. It isn't the entire generation though.

Well they're not much different than our generation when we were younger. There are some nice and intelligent kids, and some bad ones.

I've came across a few Twitter accounts lately...not sure if they're serious or trolling, but this little girl is 11 and says things like "my mom hid my Bieber albums so I hid her diabetes meds" and "if I had to choose between curing my aunt's cancer and meeting Bieber, I'd meet Bieber." That's just plain disrespectful, right? And this other chik is 14 and she's so dumb that she thinks Singapore is in Europe, she's racist and homophobic and she literally worships Bieber like he's God. If any of y'all use Twitter, look up plasticbieber and Manda Swaggie. smh...

Well, I'm only 19 years old but, hearing from the accounts of old people, there was once a time where kids respected adults sinply because they were adults and this could be someone who was a parent to them to simply being just a neighbor or family friend. My theory is this, society has become very strict on the discipline action of kids. It seems everything today is considered abuse. Parents now day tend to be so focused on being the "cool" parent that they forget to actaually be a parent which in turn allows the kid not to take them seriously. I think more parents should put the foot down and stop being so afraid of discplining you kid. It's part of being a parent! I don't have kids and I don't ever want kids, but having been raised by two parents myself that were not afraid to discipline me (whether spankings were necissary or not) I can say a lot of people are being too easy on their kids. As is obvious, kids don't even respect adults anymore. They've never really been taught to respect and they know no consequence will come out of it.

After seeing what young kids watch on TV on a daily basis, I'm not surprised at how obnoxious some of them have become. All those lily livered cartoons/sitcoms like iCarly and Phineas & Ferb soften their minds and aid them on their path to becoming complete morons. Glad my parents didn't let me waste my time watching them (although I will admit I felt very hard done by).

  • Gen Y was way worse. i think 90's kids are nicer than the bastards born in the 80's, myself included.

A survey found kids today smoke less, fight less and are more tolerant of others. I'd have to agree, kids these days would have been beat up so badly in high school a decade ago for being such wimps.

I watched that new 21 jumpstreet film, it's quite funny how they show the difference between high schools now and the ones ten years ago.

We are definately more tolerant. Probably less racist and homophobic as well.at the same time I can agree that my generation is spoiled and feels entitled. Don't blame the entire generation though, and a lot of it has to do with the parents

      • Because alot of Gen Z are babied by their parents, it was in the article i was reading. I assume it has alot to do with the "entitled" thing also. But i would rather go to high school these days than early 00's like i did.

From what I see, they seem to have a sense of entitlement. It's sad really. When they get to the real world they will be more impossible.
But yeah, sometimes I want to smack them too. Especially when I may be at the mall and they purposely bump into you and get in your face like it was your fault. Then leave laughing. Idiots.

I was just talking to my younger siblings about how lucky they are to have the things they have & to do the things they can do. I believe it's their ENTIRE generation that's disrespectful!!! Don't get me wrong, there are some good teens in the mix, but the majority of them need to get their asses kicked so they can appreciate what they have in this life

I completely agree with the OP. Kids today are rude and do not even respect Authority. I went to high school to have gum put in my hair and watch kids stick it everywhere and each other everyday.

They would scream at anyone who answered a correct answer in class. I got cussed at for saying, please, thank you, bless you. I had to watch kids be defiant to even the good teachers and just say" Fuck you teach you can kiss my ass I do not want to add a math problem".

I mean honestly I would have smacked these kids if given the option. That was my high school and this was horrible. Kids are so rude at least say bless you! I mean those are the most basic and you should do at least that. I would vote for corporal punishment I am not a kid anymore but I think some of those kids needed to get smacked for there rude behavior.

Infact if someone made a petition I would sign it and rally for it as I think we need to bring it back. I mean we are too the piont kids are beating kids on camra for you tube. Are you kidding me!

I don't think its the generation but the parents. Most parents don't pay much attention to their kids because their to busy with work. Its even worse if you have children young. They don't have time to teach them manners and responsibility and instill that in their children. Doing chores and other responsibilities actually does help you prepare for the real world.

It all depends on the parents. A lot of kids from my generation are bratty and disrespectful, but some are well mannered, intelligent, and respectful. It depends 100% on how the parents are.

I think kids are quite similar to how they were in previous generations, the environment has changed significantly for some in developed nations, but human nature has remained the same.

Our behaviors are a product of our environment as well, but I don't really think kids where ultimately more respectful back then.

I don't but last year when the new wave of freshman came in there were a lot of little shits (these are not preteens these are young adults.) Some even insulted that food servers in the cafeteria for no goddamn reason. I don't get why they were so horrible. There were a few good ones.

The parents try too hard to be the kids friend instead of their parent. Also kids get too many awards just for taking part, not actually winning. The real world doesn't work that way.
