The karma system is great. It is ammunition for wars at IIN. Such fun, such games.

Yup that's the exception to the rule but goddamn when you have 50 accounts it's a matter of how much time you've got on your hands at that point. People like to keep it on the down low because who doesn't have at least 50 accounts...

The karma system rewards people for kind, helpful, funny, or interesting comments while deterring people from making hateful comments. Without the karma system, the quality of the comments would decline.

    • Not really. The Karma system promotes some sort of same-think community where if you say something that is considered controversial by the community then they can down vote you which effects your ability to use the site.

Essentially it's intentions is for people who are helpful to be rewarded however it didn't consider that it would also mean that people that say things that others dislike will be be punished simply for not thinking like them.

I'd much rather be part of a community that has a few trolls rather than be in one where I feel like I have to be careful what I say because some people won't like that I or others don't think like them.

Finally, someone who can disagree with my comment respectfully and intelligently. You make a good point about feeling free to say whatever you want, but honestly, I think the IIN community is pretty open-minded and won't downvote just because someone thinks differently. For example, I won't downvote your comment even though I have a different opinion. I don't downvote unless a comment is blindly hateful or obviously a troll (and even then I won't downvote if it contains a remote sense of humor or effort).

        • Well I dunno. I know there are a lot of people who won't downvote for immature reasons but when I was a lot more talkative on this site which meant I expressed my views which differed from the political views of others on here I got downvoted quite often. It does happen, maybe not all the time but it can happen, and I don't think it's fair.

I've been on this site long enough for it not effect my account but I just imagine some new users wouldn't have such an easy time. Lol. :)

No. The quality of the accounts would increase, as legitimate accounts wouldn't get senselessly banned anymore because a few trolls disliked a few decent comments.

I still believe that there are more legitimate users who upvote good comments than trolls, so legitimate users won't get downvoted too much. I'm a legitimate user and my comments have never been downvoted to 0 or less.

But don't take my word for it. Everyone, if you are a legitimate user, please upvote this comment. If you are a troll, feel free to downvote it. Let's see what happens.

They will down vote you most likely. It is funny because it is probably just one main guy trolling who just rotates accounts and downvotes anyone who disagrees with his trolling opinions. Logs out downvotes..logs in to another account upvotes himself and then downvotes the target user. That is a lot of effort doing that, and in the end it is all for nothing. They are still sitting at the computer probably laughing to themselves alone like a schoolgirl thinking they are really clever.

Well either they didn't downvote me or more people upvoted than downvoted my comment. The thing is, I don't actually care if they downvote me. If I get downvoted, at least I will have wasted the troll's time downvoting my comment, so he/she might troll other posts less.

What was that you just regurgitated? Incorrect, the Karma system is useless in dealing with hateful individuals such as myself and infact encourages trolling.

What the karma system does do however is discourage legitimate users from using this site along with the automated comment pre screener limiting comments from legit users whom don't know how to by pass it.

TheAdministration is very out of touch and the site needs to be overhauled in my highly educated opinion...

Let's put your "highly educated opinion" to the test. I do believe the karma system encourages good comments by rewarding the writers of good comments. As for trolling, the karma system might not stop all trolls, but trolls are gonna troll and at least the karma system hides the most downvoted comments.

But don't take my word for it. Everyone, if you are a legitimate user, please upvote this comment and downvote the one above mine. If you are a troll, feel free to downvote mine and upvote the one above. Let's see what happens.

The way you talk is like you just believe anything some authority figure tells you. I'm sure there's an explanation somewhere on this site that "explains" the karma system and you've decided that that's the end all be all and that there are no other possibilities. Pull your head out. I hate people who don't do any critical thinking. The karma system is obviously bullshit.

Just because I agree with the site doesn't mean I didn't do any critical thinking. I thought about it and decided I agreed. You thought about it (hopefully) and decided you disagreed. My opinion isn't any less than yours just because I agree with the site.

And if the karma system is "obviously" bullshit, then why does the majority of people think it should be kept?

I don't get how your comment relates to the topic of IIN's karma system or my original comment. I never said anything about education. Although your comment shows that maybe some grammar education might not be a bad idea.

We need more features. I suggest some kind of map that pinpoints users' locations.

Wow man. That's a cool idea. So when you get privileges to thumb down, you get a map tack near your IP location. I like it. I'm going to forward you idea to Udi.
