Judges: keeping cool in regular life....

How do you think judges keep their cool in regular, everyday life?

They're used to having so much power....Everyone stands when they enter the room, they get called "Your Honor", or at least sir or m'am, they command respect and get it.

If disrespected, they can swiftly cause the offender great suffering, and have them whisked away out of their presence. Same goes if you're merely being the slightest bit offensive, like chewing gum or wearing iffy clothing. GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!!

So how the hell do they handle everyday average life, when the robe comes off and no one knows who they are?? All of a sudden they're just an average Joe, no more respect than the next guy gets, and if someone pisses them off they can't do their usual thing and give them a night in jail for it and have the bailiff drag them off. It must be hard!!

is it normal to wonder this??

I don't know about judges but I knew a prison officer who found it hard to adjust to "off-duty". You need a very different mindset when dealing with prisoners to, say, dealing with your wife.

    Yeah.
Some of them handle this like many regular folks do, by being excessively prickish. Some of them just grit their teeth and bear it.

Some of them actually ARE judges in every sense and they exert a presence of authority wherever they go through their conduct. They are not only judges of people but they judge situations too. I once had a former judge as a professor whose ability to seek out weakness in arguments had brought grown adults to the level of sniveling children. Their conduct seems to coax.the facade out of others. That class taught me that humility is far less embarrassing than sitting there going "but...! But...!". It was quite educational how he did not have to explicitly hand down his judgements, we observers just knew what the verdict was by the actions of the accused, to put it into legal terms.

They're usually regular people, but a good judge knows when to.hold em and when to fold em.
