It bothers me

When people talk shit about my country. I know it shouldn't but when people insult my country or my state it does piss me off.

  • I don't much care when people make fun of America or my state, I just find it obnoxious when people go all "You are an American, why do you love war and drink Budweiser and bla bla bla no culture bla bla I'm a dumbass who has never read Whitman or Faulkner but I listen to jazz music bla bla "World Police." People making assumptions and holding me responsible for the actions and policies of the other 319,000,000 or so people living here is obnoxious.

I concur! And it's hot that you read Faulkner.

Yeah that's normal, but then you also don't want to go to the extreme of defending your country when it's clearly in the wrong. If you love your country you should be the first one to criticise it when it does something bad.

I agree jellybean, thats the difference between patriotism and nationalism. The latter isn't good.

Nationalism is a good thing. You should look after your country first and then help other countries.

Absolutely normal. Your country is yours. It grew you. It doesn't matter what its strengths or weaknesses are or how it compares to other countries. People disrespecting your country is like people disrespecting your family.

Do you think the criticism is accurate? Most of the time it is the living conditions or certain practices people criticize, not the people as a whole. And I think that's valid. All countries have problems, and problems should be talked about, including solutions and be tried to solve. If people buy too much into stereotypes maybe tell them that they're wrong/exaggerating, you're from there after all

    • Its always grossly exaturated and without context. For example they say America has a huge gun problem and everyone is getting shot. But they dont realize 90% of the shootings are in a select few cities in a select few neighborhoods. The majority of America has very little to no gun violence and in rural areas where everyone owns guns there's often not been a murder from guns in 20+ years.

Also: The south is full of racists they all hate black people. And cops are just right wing death squads hunting black people. While there's often problems with police theres 330 million people in the country so its not far fetched to catch abuse from time to time on camera. But usually people just get pulled over and let go with no problems. Black ppl probably do get pulled over more or stopped more on average but its usually more to do with profiling due to high crime rates in the neighborhood and less to do with hatred of colored ppl.

This is why I only ever make fun of Nauru; Nauru only has a population of like 10000 people so my chances of encountering and offending someone from Nauru are very slim (unlike the average Nauruan)

The only thing I know about Nauru is its highest obesity rate.
