It’s official: america is now no. 2

The Chinese economy just overtook the United States economy to become the largest in the world. Which choice best describes your thoughts?

Americans have been fat, ignorant, and lazy for way too long. Too bad. 22
It's a travesty. Where is government support for business? 4
This marks eventual doom for all western democracies. 5
After another quiet decade, China will move to checkmate the world. 6
No worries. President Obama is doing a remarkable job. 2
Glad this happened. The world needed a good laugh. 4
Congratulations to China. We the vanquished salute you. 7

If you really want to seal the deal, you should make your lady a s'more when she comes back. Aussies dont know those...and don't even bother trying to explain what the fuck a graham cracker is.

Every country has it's short-comings and pluses. The US is no different. As to how I feel, I feel very apathetic and tired. With what our government's been doing, it's no suprise. The US is just under hard times. They might get better, or not. It depends.

America outsources- it was a short term solution, and this is the inevitable result. This was bound to happen.

Considering they have over 1 billion more people, don't you think it kinda makes sense?

All other things being equal, the countries with the largest working populations should have the largest economies.

  • Americas economy was #1? Thats really sad.

It's interesting, if you read history, how the period of world dominance has declined over the centuries. Simplistically speaking, the Roman Empire lasted several times longer that the British Empire which lasted several times longer than the American Empire.
However, I have a feeling that everyone will be speaking Chinese in a century and that they will dominate the world for a long, long time to come.

living standards in China are not as good...so as number 1 now thats something to think about.

Im not sure im too concerned ...since they have so many people wasnt it just a matter of time??? Also doesn't their growth go hand in hand with our own and as they grow we do...everyone's connected

The Chinese economic strategy is versatile such that it has overtaken our markets due to better competition. We saw it coming.

The Eurozone is slowly falling apart, recession and bond defaults will slowly spread to North America. China will dominate the world sooner than people think.

It is NOT who RULES the world that calls the shots. He who OWNS the world has true power. The wise Chinese dragon knows this. Ultimately, checkmate will be his.

To be less figurative about it, China's huge trade surplus gets used for many things. One of them is to buy the national debt of other countries. When they own enough of it, the yuan will become the reserve currency of the world. This is fine until recession hits the debtor country. Since their interest leaves the debtor economy for China, taxable GDP decreases making treasury bond issues more risky. China negotiates to buy assets in other countries in lieu of debt restructuring. At the very end of the process, China militarizes. End game - checkmate.

PS. Thanks for mentioning Kung Fu. He was a cool guy.

      • Good point about the corruption. Arabs won't cut production while recession looms for the world economy.

Yep. Them monopolistic Arabs like to sell oil at a price point where elasticity of demand is unitary, unless they're trying to squeeze out the competition.
