Isn't it about time

Isn't it about time that you can't thumb down anonymously? It seems to have turned into a popularity thing instead of a true commentary on the post.
When even humorous, lighthearted responses by unpopular posters are thumbed down heavily, it makes no sense.
Time to stand up and be identified, not sneak around in the shadows creating mayhem, only because you can do it anonymously.

I really don't think that the thumbs system is that big of a deal. If you're doing the right thing: actually contributing to the conversation or actually attempting to give good or reliable information, then it shouldn't matter what your placement is on the list of responses. If the OP is unwilling to consider your opinion simply because it was down-voted, that's their problem. They're the one's who are too lazy to actually *try* to verify what little accurate information that the internet has to offer.

I really wonder why so many users don't stop to consider that the users who get up-voted quite a bit might not actually be saying what they say for the sake of popularity? Because, you know, a lot of up-voted comments ARE good comments that one likely wouldn't be posting if they were an absolute tool. You'd have to be an absolute tool to care so deeply about being popular on an internet forum.

In addition, you have to understand that a lot of users DO come here for validation rather than to actually get help. So what if they or anyone else is displeased with your response? If they don't want to hear that fucking their sister or stealing from their Mom's snatch is wrong, nothing you say is going to persuade them otherwise, no matter how many "thumbs up" you get.

This is such a futile thing to give a shit about but I have nothing better to do right now. I'm procrastinating.

  • I've been saying it for a long time. It makes everything about popularity, and especially if a discussion is going on it basically gives people the option to make something appear to look valid merely due to popularity over the other side's position. I have seen this happen even when the popular voted side of the arguement is so incredibly moronic and is moreso PC than actually rational.

Also, given that the thumb feature now actually effects how much you can comment and vote, I think it should go.

The thumb feature is essentially a high school popularity function where people can vote something to validity by popular vote just because they agree. By taking it out it would open up to more conversation and no cowardly avoiding something because you can't address it all while voting that the thing you can't address is wrong.

Indeed. Same for up-thumbing. You should only up/downvote if the comment in question is genuine and helps the OP or fits in with the post.

That would be awesome. Not sure how such a procedure would be implemented.
