Is what i did to a client ok?

I have to get this off my chest. I'm a freelance graphic designer, I have a small-time business and I work for myself online. I met with this one client at his home who was a real estate broker who wanted a website done for his business. He was white and kinda bragged to me that he was a millionare, he had a very nice house and made expensive dinners every night. When i charge my clients i usually ask their budget when it comes to what they want done, i usually charge $500 for a site but in this case i gave him a flat rate of $2,500, the guy didn't flinch and I went on to build his new site. I feel kind of bad charging so much because of how much he makes, after awhile i think he felt kind of taken advantage of because of my flat rate.. he paid, but was never happy with what i offered and it was just a difficult client all around, i later found out he was having financial problems and was in hundreds of thousand of dollars in debt. So i feel bad taking his money, do you think i should stop charging people based on their lifestyle and financial wealth? I could tell who has the $$$ just by stepping in their house, so it's easy for me to do. Am i a bad person? Or is what I did normal?

He should not have lied to you about his life style IF he know that was how you charged. If he didn't you are in the wrong. You should have a flat anything goes rate like a real businessman!

People joke that the further they drive down my road the more expensive the same job becomes. My husband is self-employed and charges everyone the same amount. Funnily enough it's the rich who complain the most and the 'poorer' communities who give him large tips.

This is down to your own conscience and how desperately you needed the money at the time.

You should be glad you weren't one of the ones he owed hundred of thousands to. He's also in a fairly disreputable business, working on comission, based on what his clients pay.

    A tricky dilemma!!

No, ripping people off like this is not normal.

You could argue that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Or you could argue that you're ripping people off by giving them different rates. Or you could argue that you're helping the poor by giving them different rates.

But given that you made up the rules to charge people differently, now you find out this guy has financial problems, how does it make you feel? Do you think you should put $2000 in an envelope and post it anonymously through his front door?

Personally, I think it's a little morally dubious, but only a little. You didn't force him to pay that amount. He could have sought other tenders. You offered work at a price and he was willing to pay it.

        I don't think you're a horrible person.
