Is this really normal?

Is it normal that my mother has enough money to buy things "for the family" (i.e. clothing and shoes for my little brother, father, et cetera) (constantly, mind you, and 40-100€ a month), but not enough to get my hair cut, or to be precise, she'd "rather not spend money on that", and that I can just "brush my hair to the side".

We really aren't poor, but not rich, either. My dad has an average wage of about 2500-2600€ monthly before taxes (which is about 2800$), and rarely buys anything for himself. My little brother doesn't have a care in the world, so of course he doesn't ask for much either. And I don't mean to be pretentious, but I rarely ask for anything from my parents. Especially since we aren't the richest bunch in the block, but also because I don't really need much.

So asking for 10-15€ for a hair cut (first one in about 4-5 months) isn't too much to ask for, is it?

    Between my wife and I we make $300k/year (not so much after taxes). I perm her hair, she cuts mine. And having a habit of spending a lot less than you make means you eventually have enough for the things you really need.

    We all have our ideas of what's overpriced and what's worth our time. When you have your own money, you get to decide; for now your mom's preferences prevail.

      $33,600 a year for a family of 4 BEFORE taxes is rich in your book? The poverty line for a family of 4 is about $24,000 and the average 4 person household income is about $54,000. So they are closer to poor than even average, and no where near rich.

      As $33,600 is within 200% of the federal poverty line, based on other factors, the person you consider rich in your book might actually qualify for food stamps in the US.

        Sorry guys, I shouldn't say rich by compared to me yeah that's rich. I think your parents are just being cheap. I probably qualify for food stamps:(

          Well if you are single and live alone, the poverty line for a 1 person household is $11,700. You have to be within 200% so you would have to make under $23,000 to qualify. There are other factors, but if you are within the qualifying range you should consider applying.

              I am not attacking or making fun, that was a ligimate piece of advice and I am honestly trying to understand how you are managing to have a roof over your head. That is $1,000 a month and you have to at least pay Medicare and SS taxes which would leave you just over $900 a month take home. You must live somewhere very rural because $900 wouldn't cover rent and utilities in many places on even a Studio. But even if you have very cheap rent and low utilities, how do you have money left for food? Do you live on pasta, rice, and Ramon noodles?

              Do you seriously live by yourself? Are you really surviving on $900 a month or are you receiving financial assistance from family orna significant other. I assume (hope) you have no children. If you are not receiving some type of assistance, public or private, I don't understand how it is possible.

      I live in Germany. I don't where you're from, but I take it that things are cheaper where you live. By German standards, that's just barely average.

      I don't give out personal information on the Internet. Common sense. But I suppose I can tell you that I am still a student, and live with my parents.

    Have you ever heard of those wonderful hair cutting tools called scissors? A friend, a stool and a towel and bingo, it's a hair cut.

        Barber schools or beauty schools offer cheaper prices. Don't worry if the student makes a mistake the teacher will fix it:)
