Is this phobia normal?

I am terrified of large underwater things (whales, sunken ships, submarines, and the open ocean itself.) And whales are probably my biggest fear.
I know it's irrational because I'm not especially scared of sharks and things I know are dangerous in the water, it's of things that are quite larger than I am.
I do however "face my fear" and swim in the ocean and my swimming pool. But I am always afraid that the light in my pool is always a whale eye (which of course is silly, which is why I can continue to swim)
But it's to the point to where I've been reduced to tears just to see a video of someone swimming with a whale in the ocean.
I can't even play video games levels such as the sunken ship level in Mario 64.

I can't even find a "phobia" word for it.
Anyone else with the same problem?

    ok, enough of that

But, i too cannot stand to play the sunken ship level in Mario 64.... wow hi-five for that one.

could it be that you don't like huge-ass creatures around you, like sharks aren't all huge but whales... whales are, well, whales.... they are huge! it is rather scary that something is living and that huge....

I'm so happy to see this thread because like others, I too love water (going to the beach is so relaxing for me), but big things in the water really scare me.

I did not grow up around the ocean, in fact, I was rather land locked--so I never had a terrifying experience growing up from where this fear developed.

My skin crawls when I see a picture of a large cruise ship--it's the immense size of it that terrifies me. Once, I was walking over the Golden Gate Bridge when I heard this louder than life horn that almost knocked me off my feet. When I looked over the side of the bridge, I saw a HUGE barge emerging from one side, and it scared me so much that I just froze in my tracks. It was so overwhelming for me.

i have a similar fear of things in the water, it makes me shudder to think of swimming in the ocean or lake and to touch or be touched by a a log or anything that is floating just under the water, even seeing things just below the surface that I can't quite make out, send fear running thru me, i want to get away and out of the water, and all this with loving to kayak
one day i was kayaking in a slow moving river, and bottom was coming up, i could just make out the thick grass, when i passed a rock or log or something in the water, it took almost everything i had to not paddle away as fast as i could, i had a huge adrenaline rush and it took a long time to calm down and have that rush go away
if i was out in the ocean and the boat sank, i would be parlyzed by fear to approach a buoy that would save me from drowning for fear of the anchor chain that goes all the way to the bottom, the moss and things hanging off of the chain i could not see well, if at all, would scare me too much for me to swim over and hang on

I don't have it as severe, but I do have a minor phobia of large things under the water. I once swam in a rather clear lake when I was younger and still had to have a swimming vest on. I looked below me and there were very very large trees under the water, that had fallen quite a while before. I began to cry and thrash and scream for my father, who came rushing to me just to find I was terrified of the trees. I can't swim in sea weed water, either, if it touches me for if i feel it may be close I scream and kick.

Someone who fianlly understands! I am terrified of sunken ships, submarines, cars and pretty much anything else man-made thats sunken underwater and have been since I can remember. To my knowledge I have never had an expirence with any of these things that should make me fear them. I just do. Seeing a picture or watching Titanic puts me on edge, but it doesn't make me run for the hills or anything. But being near a place where I know a sunken ship is or in the ocean where I can't see or touch the bottom freaks me out big time. I guess it has something to do with things that I can identify that don't look the way they should. Whales, I don't know anything about that, but they are really big and it's understandable if you're afraid of them. That pool light thing is really creepy, by the way. I'm sure this is more common than most people think, but talking to a therapist will probably help work it out and maybe even overcome it.

This is me!!! It's not something I ever really talk about, but even if I'm watching something sinking on tv in the water, or watching scuba divers check out a shipwreck or some sort of wreckage, it freaks me out! I look away. I don't know why. What really got me, was when a guy I was dating and I were watching a movie, and we both were like, "oh boy" on the sinking boat part - and he proceeded to tell me he had the SAME fears. I couldn't believe it. I believe in past lives and I think it wouldn't be totally weird if that might be how I died or something. I have no other reason for these fears.

    Wow!

Growing up I had the same fear...well almost. I grew up on a lake and I rememeber I would always be treadfully terrified of the over sized carp which occationally swam up to the shore. I used to have the worst nightmares about swiming in the lake and then being attacked by an angler fish, which are terrifying looking things. I also have a fear of sunken ships and anything which is capsized under water. It's not nearly as intense as it was when I was younger, but I still have dreams about wierd fish.

I'm sure you will grow out of it if your still young. We all have our wierd fears.

The pool light part comes over to me, if your interested please read this : So basically, I’ve always been afraid of those lights in the pool. When you look under the water at them they just look dark black wholes that are coming for you when I go into my pool there’s one right by the step so I always stay on the step and never go past it at any cost, anytime I am swimming with my mum she always has to go on the side of the pool light yet I thought it was just me being stupid. I would NEVER touch them but my mum did to try to convince me, STORY TIME: so I was in the pool with my mum and my auntie and the pump was on and it’s directed to the pool light and I was in a float ring and the pump brought me next to the pool light, I was screaming “HELP” but my mum would always say “don’t be stupid” I nearly touched it and swam as FAST as I could back to the step panicking. Thanks for reading PS : IS THIS NORMAL?

  • Ringpullguy1000

It may be that you have a fear of drowning, not of whales, do you often dream of the ocean?
There's probably somthing in your life that's overwhelming you too, is there some problem with bills or a relationship? Or maybe it's a general fear of life itself, like if you were living with your parents (nothing wrong with that btw) you may feel afraid of striking out on your own and away from the safety of that sheltered place that you feel so comfortable in.
Therapy could help, wouldn't hurt to try in any case

  • Maybe when you were little you saw one of those movies that has a giant shark in them, and you being so little, you might've thought it was a whale at the time. Therefore, you probably thought all whales were mean like that, or if you had ever watched pinocchio, the whale scene may have scared you.

Holy whoa, that's me in a nutshell. I love water but big things in the water scare me alot. Boat hulls, and fish or hell a whale would be terrifying. I hear you there....i even used to imagine as a kid the clanging of the pipes in my bathtub were a large whale just underneath. Weird...not normal probably, but I understand your fear completely.

you think thats odd? its natural to be scared of thing physically superior to us and thing we dont fully understand, and whales happen to be on he top ten of those lists. There real enigmas.

just try to avoid situations invovling whales, or submarines, and with the help of couciling you should be free of this curse in a few years time, then you can be free to explore as many sunken ships as you like.

    I have the same thing!
im not as bad as you to be honest, but i get really creeped out by massive things underwater for some reason. even if they arent aive, like ships. This is weird, but i saw a picture of a massive blimp, and it wasnt even underwater, but because it was massive it scared me, i dont know why. Its not like im scared of buildings, just blimps that are on the ground and you can see how big they are.
    wow thats weird

I also can't stand to see pictures of things like submarines, blimps, the bottom of ships, any man-made thing in the ocean such as buoys, torpedoes, propellers, etc. I love swimming, flying and would even like to travel in a submarine, but surprise me with a picture of one of these things and my mind freezes. I have to close my eyes. I've had this weird fear since birth. Even stranger is that I'm fascinated with these objects and love seeing pictures of them as long as I'm with someone and know that the picture is there. I love reading National Geographic but turn the pages slowly just in case there's a picture of one of the above mentioned things. Tell me this is NOT NORMAL...
