Is this even legal?

Hi..
My boss is a dick. I work at a small Internet based company.. And my boss (the owner) fires people just because he doesn't like them. He openly tells them that he hates them and that they should leave immediately. He then pays them a few months' salary (like 2 months) so that they won't go to any labour courts.

Today I found out i'm next on the chopping block. What's ironic is that the person getting my job was once hated by my boss.. But has since managed to stay only because she had a kid.. And my boss felt sorry for her.

Sorry for the long post. My question really is.. Is it normal/legal to fire someone.. Then pay them to essentially shut up?

I feel kinda bummed.. And needed to 'talk' to someone. Thanks for reading/listening.

Bosses are free to fire based on most anything (not age, sex, race, etc.). Don't fight it, take the money and run - 2 months is pretty good

No this is discrimination. He can not just fire you since he decided not to like you. You should report him. If he fires you it should be that you are doing a bad job. Not for you existing at all. He is discriminating against you since you do not have children. This says he hate anyone who does not have kids. This is not right or fair. You can take him to court over this.

Wealth comes from God; so don't worry about it. Put your trust in the One God of Abraham, move on, and find yourself a job that is respectable and you can be happy with.

How many times have you worried about the future, and/or where money is going to come from, but it came anyway?

Yes, you WILL have to do your work, but if you really put your trust in God, and look for something new, you WILL get it.

Don't worry about it, you're aight.

It depends on your state. in the state of Florida they don't have to give a reason.every job application i have filled out and every job I've had says that they can terminate at anytime.check out the laws in your state cuz it varies.

Although what he's doing is technically illegal, theres really no point in fighting it. He'll make up a valid excuse for firing you. Bosses can fire people for almost anything as long as it's not discriminatory.

Bottom line: You're going to get paid for 2 months of not working. Take the money and just leave it at that.

any law regarding employment will be local to your state or provence. so it's up to you to find out what can or cannot be done in your area. any job is a privilege, not a right. only with a union can a company be forced to keep an unwanted employee, but know that they usually will make you miserable if they are forced to keep you.

if there is a labor board suit, you won't likely keep the job. he'll get fined. you will be awarded severence. though, it could turn out that it is actually less than the two months the dick gives now.

here in the states, a small employer can easily fire anyone they choose to. it's easy enough to document any infraction so that if they are called to prove the firing was legal, they can.

it is, after all, his company.

Opps! You can be fired for No cause, such as the employer stating, "it isn't working out." It is illegal to fire for bad cause which is termination because of sex, race, age, religion and others. In some states termination for sexual orientation is bad cause. Regardless of reason employer gives you for being fired, contact (I believe) FEHA. They will investigate and make sure the employer did not terminate for bad cause but provide a no cause or good cause explaintion.

your boss is abusive and he thinks hes above the law. you and others that have been fired by this asshole should get together and go to see a lawyer and sue the fucl out of him. then with the money start your own company.

Yes. Since you mentioned you work for a small business, I will assume that you and other employees are not members of a labor union. If you were the "collective bargaining agreement" would likely set forth a progressive discipline policy to follow before an employee can be terminated. For serious offenses such as theft, immediate termination is permitted even with the protection of a union.
Without a union or employment contract you can be terminated for good cause, such as theft. You can be fired for no cause, such as the employers sayingsomeone else theyc theftf iscipline polemployer was a small do not have an employment contract, are not

And they are given 2 months pay because by doing this the person fired cannot file for unemployment at that time. When a former worker is granted unemployment the former company must pay those wages through unemployment taxes.
*ive worked in the legal field.

Actually people, it depends on which state you live in. Take Texas for instance, here it is legal to fire anyone for any reason (excluding sex,race,etc.). You can be fired and you are not entitled to a reason for the firing.

That's ridiculously illegal and especially to pay you to keep quiet. Report him to whoever all these other people are saying.

Bosses are actually not free to fire people for no reason. Unless there is a valid reason, such as poor performance, theft, etc, it is discrimination and harrassment. Why do you think he pays people off? Because what he is doing is wrong. Go to the labor board if you get fired for no reason.

Call the Labor Board asap, even b4 you get fired, they'll research & make sure your job is secure.

Yeah that's happened to me. If you feel you're being fired for no reason you should refuse the severence package and take it to the labour board.
