He's upset because he thinks he's replaceable now.

Basically, to read between the lines, he just said that to be "romantic," in an odd way. Realistically, if you were kidnapped and murdered by an unknown assailant with no leads, he ain't seeking revenge on no one. However, he was hoping your response would be the typical, "AWWWH BAE," or, "I would be devastated if you died," or something along those lines ending with a make-out session/quickie/BJ or whatever. But instead you gave him a real as fuck reply and he wasn't ready for how real it was, so not only was his efforts to impress you fell short, but now he knows you'll replace him with a dog (or in his mind, another man).

TL;DR - Your boyfriend is stupid.

I think your plan is perfect! Vengeance is a great way to ruin your life, and end up in jail. I'd rather be chillin with my cat, and maybe a cool dog, than with a guy who who seems to be jealous of a hypothetical dog.

He sounds like a sensitive one. Idk how he’d be upset but maybe since he says he would get revenge for you but you wouldn’t back. Then again violence/murder doesn’t fix murder you can’t fix that it’s just another messed up crime added. I’d probably run away from the violence too and get a new pet. I think that’s the better idea here.

i see how you meant it but it sort of sounded like your boyfriend's death would really make you sad. And now he's sad/annoyed/disappointed because he thinks you don't love him that much. Maybe explain to him what you meant and try not to make matters worse. I'd be pretty devastated if the person I loved told me "if you die that's okay i'll just get myself a dog"
