Is there a way to know how much i can lift without going to a gym?

I see a lot of job descriptions that say I must be able to lift so-n'-so pounds regularly. Well, I'm not exactly the strongest guy in the world. Are there any common household items or special exercises that would give me some indication of how much I can lift?

Sure there is (comment) 5

most jobs call for yall to be able to lift either 50 or 70 pounds

a five gallon pail fulla water weighs bout 40 pounds so git a couple pails fill em accordinly and see if yall can lift em

yall could go to the home depot and buy a weighed sack fulla sand or cement or somethin too

if theys wantin yall to lift durin an interview be sureta lift with yalls legs in fronta the interviewers or they'll see yall as a hurt back lawsuit waitin to happen

    • Why are you typing like that...? I think we have a bucket in the garage, maybe I'll try that.

A gallon of paint weighs 10 pounds. If you can curl 4 of those bad boys on a broom stick in your hand you know you just curled 40lbs.

Thats the easiest thing I can think of. Also you can buy a set of weights off craigslist for cheap buddy. That would be more accurate.

If one is lifting heavy items regularly, one needs to know HOW to do so without injuring one's self. As Darkoil said, this all may be well beyond your capabilities, but you might want to start with learning the proper way to lift heavy items. Then you could move on to actually figuring out what constitutes a heavy item.
