Is the term dude an insult

Do you consider calling or referring to someone as "dude" rude. To me it comes across as an uneducated male put down. Such as listen dude, hey asshole, and when used towards a female or by a female seems even more insulting. Seems out dated or is it just a normal term for a person to use.

Listen dude you are really overthinking this. It's like being offended at being called in a group guys when in a group of friends. It keeps the social cohesion. I would say it's worse to say hey guys... and you.

nah dude, the word dude is like the most neutral word. I've never thought of it as an offensive word or an insult. and I don't see problem with girls using it. I use it when talking to girls sometimes. Its a totally gender neutral word at this point, dude.

No, it’s just a word for a guy, man or person in general.

I'm a Generation-Xer from the 80s so words like, "dude", and or, "chick" don't upset me, or strike me as rude, and or insulting.

Dude is just a standard term like "bro" or "homie". It in no way is an insult in the modern world.

Ahh okay, dude, good to see that you're still here. Ages ago did you have an account called something along the lines of this? My memories pretty bad but I think I remember talking to a guy with a similar name to this one about butt plugs when I was fresh here, lmao

  • I remember when I was growing up it was one of *the* things for girls to be like "yeah I'm a girl and I say dude, so what!" like they were establishing their right to use a convenient word

But I guess now the trend is for people to use it ironically/sarcastically, in the sense that it's being used to convey camaraderie when the user is really feeling indifferent

I don't see anything inherently wrong with it, it's just a convenient word people can use at almost any moment

A dude is a camel's penis in the original sense of the word, but I've never heard it used in that context.

If someone calls me dude I usually take it as a friendly greeting.

Nah dude... it's good bro. But seriously, it's not an insult, maybe it was in the 19th century... but now it's just a casual way to refer to friends, or even strangers. I've even called girls dude and they don't care. You're overthinking it dude.

Nah, I’m a girl call everyone dude. It’s something I’ve done since I was little. I hung around with the boys a lot as a kid at the habit just kind of stuck. Obviously it’s not the kind of language I use at work but it’s not offensive or anything, just casual.

If someone called me dude I would assume they are a Gen X American male. TV told me that the men of that generation were calling each other dude over in the states, as well as driving big trucks and eating big macs. Everything on TV is of course accurate.

I know my opinion in this doesn't matter since I'm ancient, and you're only interested in the folderol of your fellow young whipper-snappers, but I've never considered 'dude' dismissive. Of course, the tone it's spoken in, the context and the non-verbal communication going on matters a lot.

It's probably long out of fashion now, but if I want to be condescending to a guy, I use 'brah' or 'bro'. If I wanted to annoy a young woman, I'd refer to her as 'lass'. If I wanted to really piss her off, I'd call her 'poppet'.

Every time I hear someone use the word 'dude', I can't help thinking of The Dude in The Big Lebowski. It's hard to use the word negatively with that character in mind.
