Is the flu shot pointless?

I was watching a show on vaccines and I started looking up side effects. I looked up side effects for flu vaccine but they leave out one side effect. That side effect they do not want to tell you about is that is makes you have the flu. I had the flu once and I went to the doctor and they gave me a shot after I had been puking all day. So I started puking all day.

I have been getting the flu shot for years and I swear by them. I used to get sick every year, like clockwork, right around the Holidays. It would last about a week. EVERY year, since I can remember. Since I've started getting a flu shot, I no longer get considerably sick. Granted, I'll still get some pretty nasty colds, but nothing that would keep me bed ridden.

I absolutely love 'em. I've never gotten sick as a result of getting them and I've never experienced any side effects.

That's how flu shots work. That's how all vaccines work.

I have never received a flu shot and have only had the flu once in the past 20 years or so. I see no need to get one for myself. I am not at high risk for contracting it. I think too many people get it out of fear. My sister got one a few years ago because she works around children but she still got the flu. I'm not convinced they are for everybody.

I'm started to be turned off on the idea of vaccines. I know that they can help people, but it's the side-effects that scare me the most... A person can build up their immune system naturally by taking herbs for less cost.

Yes and no. I went to a private school for half of 1st grade, but I was taken out and home schooled for the rest. I've gotten the flu shot for all of my life except for last year, I think.

The flu shot exposed your body to the flu so that you will build immunity.

    • It does nothing if you already have the flu. How is that productive?

Duh, you are supposed to get it BEFORE you get the flu.

        • They gave me it when I had the flu. If it is a prevenative why do they give it to you during.

You replied to me earlier saying the flu shot c caused you to get sick... I don't knowwhat happened to you, but perhaps you should see a counselor about it. What could have been a pretty good discussion, you have turned into some sort of illogical emotional tragedy.

for a little while but it had noting to do with vaccines. I got what I needed to get for school, which I've been out of for quite a while. As an adult I just don't care to get them. And I haven't had the flu since I was a kid. Hmmm

        • Well that means you did get vaccines. You are saying you got vaccines for school and also say "I do not get vaccines" so you contradicted yourself. Only one of those statements can be true not both. As a adult you do not actually need them.

Riiight. But a lot of adults do get them. As an adult I do not. As a kid, I did. Contradict my eye.

            • Also I know some adults get them but at that point you make a choice if you go to doctor or not. Also why are we suddenly talking about line of vision?

It's impossible for it to give you the flu since it's a dead virus. You can still possibly get the virus, but it won't give it to you.

I think it depends. I don't even remember the last time i had a flu shot...and i don't remember the last time i had the flu. I have a great immune system, though. Actually, i did get flu shots when i was pregnant... I want completely comfortable with it, but i knew it was the best thing to do (h1n1 was breaking out everywhere and i was at higher risk). If you are a young child, pregnant, elderly or get sick easily you should have the flu shot. It's not supposed to give you the flu, it has the dead virus in it which prepares your body to fight the live one, or something like that.

    • No it will gives the flu to some people. I know because I had them and I got sick. My parents told us when we were little they do not take us for that very reason. So my parents never took us(me and my siblings) to get them as kids. Also you just stated that they are injecting a flu which means if your immune system is not strong enough to completely fight off the virus you are going to get ill. Also yes they give you a strain of a dead or dying virus.

They don't, and cannot give you the virus. It is a dead or deactivated flu virus. There's still a 1/30 chance that you may get the flu, but it won't give it to you.

...it doesn't. Again, there's still a 1/30 chance that you'll get it because it doesn't make you 100% immune, but it's definately worth getting.

            • It makes some people sick. If it makes you sick I think it defeats the purpose. Especially if it is not 100% guarantee that it prevents it in which case getting it to begin with was willingly making yourself sick.

The shot is next to pointless. While it will protect against the more severe strains of influenza virus, it doesn't protect against them all. In other words, shot or not, you can still get sick. Influenza strains mutate regularly too, so while the shot protects you for around 6-10 months, you can still get the exact same flu, later in the year.

If you get em for free, go for it. If you're paying, don't waste your money.
