Is the 2010s and second 1980s?

I love the 80s, everything about it was awesome. The TV, the Movies, the Music, the fashion, prosperity, the list goes on, well anyways, something hit me after watching the MTV awards; The 2010s is a lot like the 80s, really colorful clothes, lots of hipsters pretty much the equivalent of the 80s "Yuppie" and really powerful electronic music, oh and lets not forget of about new dominant TV format in the 2010s which is now reality TV as opposed to the sitcoms of the 80s. In many ways i feel like our decade is a second 80s of course a more polished and advanced and exaggerated version of it, much like the 80s was a more polished and exaggerated version of the 50s. Those were just of few random thoughts that I've begun to realize. Anyone else notice this?

Yes the 2010's is a second 1980s 7

      Agreed

      2010s:
      Bad economy
      Tons of chaos
      Many terrorists
      Barely any jobs
      Culture borrowed from other decades
      Whiny pussies for people
      Crappy electronic music
      One direction
      Evil iranians
      Hipsters
Smartphone (one of a few good things!)
      Xbox one

      1980s
      Good economy
      Many jobs
      Ronald Reagan
      Cocaine
      Yuppies
      Arcade games
      Crappy electronic music
      Evil Iranians
      Awesome Metal music
      Michael jackson
      Tacky clothes
      Max headroom
      Atari 2600

(Good and bad listed for each)

      The 80s were definitely better.

things I hated about the 80's

        my one evil stepmom

        clothing esp women with mullets

no cell phones so it was so hard to find people

        grey teeth

        everything was materialistic

the phobia of aids and the lack of knowledge about it?

        everything else was awesome though
        you could smoke everywhere
        people were more chill yanno

like eating peanut butter sandwiches everyday for lunch tramping all over ny on my bike and my mom not giving a shit as long as I was home by dark
hanging out at the pool with rebekkah claussen and her bro chaz
        mtv
having parties in abandoned houses cheap movie tickets....

        "bad economy"
if there was any time when the economy was worse it was the reagan eara. The republicans are absolutely deluded and only created growth by outsourcing jobs to asia. Also the Iranians were just as evil in the 80s but obamas way of dealing with them is questionable, so i'll give you that.

The 80s borrowed much of its culture from the 50s as the 2010s does with the 80s. Also a got comparison to cocaine would be synthetic drugs which are really big now. But yeah i agree with the OP, we are in a second 80s, except without the backward republicans.

Let's see, many factories are closed, thousands laid off, gas until just last year was $4 a gallon in Missouri, high unemployment, 41% of the us population on welfare, 20 trillion in debt, 10 trillion of it piled on in the last eight years!

Yeah, our economy is SO much better now! (Sigh)
(At least houses cost next to nothing!)

You don't have to be a Republican to know we have the worst economic recession since the great depression!

Now, put down the Union propaganda, stop striking and get back to work, there are many people who will want your job!

In terms of style 80s nostalgia seems to be in. Just like 70s nostalgia was in a few years ago. It seems every young generation is idealizing a time before they were born or when they were kids.

I don't think anyone could make clothes uglier than the 80's and music as awesome as the 80's...

So many nostalgic 80's votes. Subjectively, the 80's just had better QUALITY music hits, too much goddam crap makes it past the MTV filter these days.

    1980s brought us MDMA!

What have we got now? MCAT and kids sniffing nitrogen canisters, fucking light weights, no creativity.

The '80s was terrible. It's the decade that unfettered capitalism became the norm. Margaret Thacher, bank deregulation, the destruction of the unions.

Liberals hate the 80s because it proved that true conservatism worked. Miss those days, lots of good tv back then.

If anything I'd say 2010s fashion has more similarities to the 90s than the 80s. There's more neutral colours, minimal styles, some subtle grunge-y elements.

The 80s was all about "throw on as much neon, hairspray and glitter as you can", and in my opinion it was fucking ugly, tacky and tasteless. That's not the 2010s. With clothing at least, we're more subtle and understated.

Maybe I'm biased, since I'm experiencing the 2010s in that "young adult" late teens/early 20s kind of age (I'm 22 now). Regardless, I think the 2010s is FAR superior to the 80s where fashion is concerned.

    • Thats such a stereotypical view of the 80s, the over exaggerated look is the kind you'd find in Halloween stores, most people dressed pretty decently back then. Watch some sitcoms and movies from the 80s and you'll know what i mean people dressed in a very sophisticated way, lots of sharp corners and very formal hairdos.

Sorry I see it in the movies and TV shows too :P Even when people were *relatively* dressed down by 80s standards, it was still pretty ridiculous (in my opinion).

There were some occasions it looked sophisticated though, I'll give you that. You definitely can't look at the 80s and say "nobody made an effort"... it was just a bit TOO much effort haha

It's an acquired taste henny, it's not for everyone
