Is staying up late sleeping all day caused by depression or is it norm

It was always hard for me to go to bed early enough to get enough sleep before school. I'm also not very motivated to do anything at all unless I absolutely have to or I'm going to fail a test grade or something. I never thought it was that abnormal or that it was severely abnormal if it was, but sometimes I wonder if I could be mildly depressed or something. I'm also angry a lot of the time for not really any reason. Especially when I get too bored.

I was prescribed abilify once for a temporary anxiety issue (long story). I don't think I really needed it for anxiety, so I started going off it again recently. While I was on it, it was much easier to motivate myself to do a lot more things and I went to bed earlier than like 3 or 4 am on a school night. I was never like that until I was on it and then when I started going off, I got a lot more lazy again and stay up too late all the time even though I know I shouldn't.

Abilify is an antipsychotic usually used to treat bi-polar, schizophrenia, and autism according to what I've read online. Sometimes they give it to depressed people in addition to an antidepressant to treat depression, but usually only in addition to an antidepressant. Since abilify is a partial agonist of dopamine and seratonin, it works differently than other antipsychotics, which usually just lower dopamine levels. I hypothesize that if I am somewhat low on dopamine or seratonin, the partial agonizing effect probably helps. (depressed people have low seratonin and add people have low dopamine. schizophrenics usually have too much dopamine). Do you think abilify works on depression on its own without antidepressants?

Am I slightly depressed or just hypochondriac? I mean I wondered before I tried any psych drugs and I don't do any illegal drugs just so you know. IIN?

Bad sleep pattern makes you unmotivated and lethargic so it could be contributing to the way you are feeling. Its a bit of a viscous cycle, try to break the habit and I guarantee you will feel better and more motivated, alert and positive.

Speaking from experience, I had a similar problem recently, now I feel a lot better, more focused and happy.

I have depression and I remember that I always thought " that sounds like me" when I did research on the Internet. I think the most important question for you is ' do I enjoy my life or am I just living trough it without any interest?'
You're welcome to write me an E-Mail if you've got any questions left.

I have the same problem! but i've basically given up on life because it's never going to be solved (for me personally) It's good to know someone else has this problem too at least.. Sigh, people like "country roads" obviously haven't had to live with this problem themselves so they wouldn't understand.

It's not a normal thing but if your depressed its to be expected. Most depressed ppl have a hard time sleeping because they have too much on their mind and they bring it with them to bed which makes it hard to sleep because they have so much to think about... The best I could say is talk to someone....

CountryRoads is such a troll. She insults people, blames them if they say anything about it, and then deletes her post so no one will blame her because she's too cowardly to let any of her guilt show.

  • I think you just don't understand what real stress is. most other people don't voluntarily work as hard as me. It's not possible to get sleep and work hard anyway, so I think I'll just be lazy and stop working hard. I'll probably be happier that way. I've worked hard enough for long enough to know it's not worth it.

why is laziness such a bad thing? You say I should sleep, but then you say I'm being lazy. You can't work hard AND have time to sleep. It's better just to be mediocre.

Also, a lot of people don't understand what severe clinical depression is, like countryroads. they just say a depressed person is lazy without knowing anything about how the brain works. Considering I was diagnosed by a professional with severe clinical depression and severe concentration difficulty (which was NOT caused by solely by irregular sleeping), and I did have REAL problems functioning before that were not just because of my sleep, I think people who are too lazy to really think about causes just label complex problems as lazy because they're dumb. They don't know what depression is because they haven't had it.

If anything, all I learned in life is that laziness pays better than hard work because hard work will just make you miserable and earning all the achievement awards and money in the world won't fix it. The only way to avoid more severe depression is not to try. Only a fool or someone who does rely on drugs or medication to make it easier would disagree.

I'm not saying that sleep isn't important at all, but I don't think it's the only reason I'm lazy and apathetic. Even when I do sleep enough, I still don't care about doing anything unless I have to. Besides, if I did work hard, it would be impossible to get both sleep and decent accomplishments, so basically, if I need to sleep, I have to be lazy either way.

Abilify is just a mild antidepressant but it's STILL an antidepressant. The drug company calls it an add on because they want you to take both, which means more money for them. Prozac is another good mild antidepressant but maybe look into natural supplements. I take lots of fish oil and vit b and sometimes melatonin when I can't sleep.

Jenny101's right, it's like a viscious circle, try to get real tired and go to bed early, same thing the next day. If you get up late and/or you do nothing of your day, you won't need to sleep early...

I was labeled depressed, bi polar, all those things. Really it came down to me making a decision to not take life so seriously anymore. Start enjoying yourself more. We all die sooner then we know anyway, so ralax and enjoy the ride.

    Sounds like laziness.
Go to sleep early. Wake up early. It sucks getting into that cycle but you need to discipline your sleep cycle or you'll be useless.
When my sleep schedule gets off and I go to bed late and sleep in, it takes me a week to get normal and motivated again. It makes me lazy and uninterested and unmotivated.
