People like to say "respect is earned". Do you agree with this?

    I tend to give everyone a base level of respect which I add to or subtract from as needed. So I guess it can be both, in some respects, depending on the person giving it.

    "Respect is earned" it's an old saying and it stood the test of time because it's true.

      My respect for you isn't hidden deep inside - it doesn't exist

    I tend to give respect initially, but for the recipient to keep my respect he has to earn it, pretty much just by not screwing up and losing my respect.
