Is my teenager normal?

I have noticed that my teenage son is incredibly slow at doing any schoolwork. Tonight he had to copy one page of text and it took him an hour and a half! He sat down, wrote the title, got up and went for a drink, wrote a sentence, went for a snack, wrote another sentence, went to the bathroom, finished the first paragraph, texted his friend..... and so it went on, while I sat there timing him.

He honestly cannot do anything for more than a period of 10 minutes - except play stupid computer games for hours.

I am seriously thinking he must have ADHD or something like this.

Please help. Do you think this is normal?

Have you considered that schoolwork sucks, and most human beings would rather do damn near anything other than having to sit and copy a page of text?

Or you can just pump him full of drugs that will make him feel completely apathetic and complacent - make him an information zombie. Happiness is but a distraction, after all. Finish school, work in office, produce babys, die...

He must be depress. Talk to him, and ask is something wrong about life right now. Because I'm going to be 18 soon and I feel this way alot because I made a ton of mistakes in the past.

I like that too. It doesn't really mean he has ADHD. He could have a low attention span. The possibilities are endless. Don't label him until you're sure.

Of course it's normal! Us teenagers HATE schoolwork and LOVE to procrastinate!

  • I eventually sat down and timed him when I realised previously that it took him 7 hours to read over 3 paragraphs of an essay! This is completely alien to me as I'd have got it done so as to have free time with my mates. The weather is lovely, his friends are calling and he's still tickling about at a leisurely pace. He doesn't seem to have any concept of time or doesn't care that he is wasting many hours, even when he has an exam the next day. I just can't understand this speed of working at all.

  • Maybe it's because the education system doesn't suit boys way of learning anymore? Boys best progress with competition, which is why people suggest so many boys play video games, because they compete with other people, and they want to progress to become better in such a competitive enviroment.

Sadly, the education system is making it easier for girls than it is boys. Boys thrive on being better, and they can't compete with school work when the education system has taken away nearly every competitive part in learning.

Why do you think more females are leaving with higher education nowadays? It wasn't that way before, and it can't be as simple as "boys are just getting dumber", there must be a reason for it. The education system of the past shows males doing great compared to the ones today, which shows there is a problem.

Perhaps make it seem as if he can't do it so that his pride of proving that he can makes him engage in his work?

If you think he's ADD or ADHD talk to your doctor about testing.

Totally normal. At least he's getting it done. When I was in high school, I would've just not done it and gone to hang out with my friends instead.

It still happens to me even though I'm 24 now. At work, I have to drink a Red Bull or a Monster just to drudge through the monotonous computer work. Though, just like your son, I have absolutely no problem playing video games for hours on end (so much more engaging).

I have been like that my entire life! I used to be medicated for ADD when I was middle school aged, but quit taking it when I stated high school. I did well in high school and graduated college, so it's something he can overcome with effort.

You're lucky he even did it.

I would have done that the morning before it was due, and I'm not doing too shabbily.

No one wants to sit there and do school work, its just way to boring to do that. So yes I say it is very normal. Your just lucky he is even doing his work.

  • Completely normal, school work is boring, what did you expect him to do? Jump right into it like it was a group orgy with the cheerleading squad? (They still have cheerleaders in school right, its been awhile for me?) The same thing happened to me all the time, and you know what? The same thing still happens to me when I am at work now. Real work sucks just like school work did. At least I get paid for this.

Let me guess things about him:

    - High IQ
    - Socially awkward
    - Unmotivated
    - Borderline depression
    - Gets bullied at school
    - Very good with technology
    - Likes science-fiction and fantasy books and movies
    - Has only a few close friends
    - Cynical and disillusioned with life
    - Sensitive and good-natured.

Did I get it right? If I got three or more of those points correct, I'm afraid you'll just have to come to terms with the fact that your son is a nerd.

As a student myself i write the title to my essay then text or read a magazine, it's normal it's really just procrastination don't worry about, what's needed is to be on his case like white on rice, but you can take a horse to the river but you can't force it to drink. he'll grow up & change once he faces the consequences of his actions like failing tests etc
