Is my period normal?

My period is usually quite irregular, i have pcos, but this time it was 3 weeks late. My period started so i put a pad on but there was no blood at all afterwards, and it hasn't started again - it's been 3 days. I'm thinking that it could be stress related because that day was when i was on holiday still and was due to come back home, but there was a mix up with our flight and we ended up sleeping at this incredibly cold airport and getting on another one. But is this normal, should i go to the doctors for it? I haven't had any other symptoms like stomach aches or anything

  • Hahahaha relax alittle bit man! I'm not ripping into anything, it was just a joke. I appreciate the advice I really do. I appreciate any advice when it comes to my medical issues because I'd be willing to try anything to get myself sorted out medically. I know you didn't say I shouldn't use the pill, I'm just used to people offering herbal alternatives, and then following up with "...because the hormones in the pill are bad for you" and so on and so forth so I guess its just force of habit to defend my reasons for using the pill. By the way, you said you guess I'm from USA, aren't you? Where are you from? I thought most people on here were from the USA, I find it really interesting to be communicating with people from different countries :)

  • I'm not retarded, I know where the reply button is, but my blackberry won't let me click on it. And no, I'm not from america, I live in south africa where the health care system is even shitter than america's. Basically, you need to be rich to get quality health care. I've tried everything and believe me, natural remedies don't work. I need the pill as much as I hate it. I can't wait to have a hysterectomy and be rid of all the bullshit my uterus puts me through. And no need to apologise, you're not the first person who's reacted unfavourably towards my interests/beliefs in birth control and its usage. I don't get offended that easily.

I never said you were retarded, nor did I say you shouldn't take the pill. Sorry for offering advice if you're just going to rip into everything. Jesus.

  • Charli.m as you know I can't reply directly but I hope you get to see my reply. I haven't been checked for endometriosis, or anything actually. I've never been for a gynea check up because I never thought it was nessicary and then when all the prolonged bleeding issues started I made a call to book an appointment with the cancer association who do check ups for free and they are no longer doing it :( I can't afford a private gynea, they cost between 800 and 900 bucks. State hospitals have long waiting lists with no guanrantee of being helped so I'm in abit of a pickle. I saw a GP and explained my symptoms and he prescribed me a birth control pill with one hell of a potent progesterone and told me to see a gynea so yeah. I did consider that I might have endometriosis because even now that I never bleed, I still have random cramps every now and then that feel a lot like uterine contractions.

Replying really isn't complicated. The link is right next to the thumbs. Just click/touch it.

I guess you're USA? Beginning to see why you're asking so many questions, the health care system there goes against basic human rights, as far as I'm concerned. In light of that, I apologise for being snarky with you.

A GP sadly will not be fully qualified to deal with PCOS or endometriosis. You'd need an endocrinologist or a gynecologist, respectively. Or endos might do endometriosis, I don't know.

I honestly don't think this site is going to be of much benefit for this sort od questioning, though. You really are better off asking this stuff on a medical site. For PCOS, try Googling "PCOS diet" it's a site run by a lady named Tarryn and it has some good info.

You could also look into alternative therapy. I have seen naturopaths in the past, and they have been amazing (one diagnosed my thyroid disease two years before the doctors considered it a problem). I was put on a herbal treatment that helped for many years. I am currently seeing a Traditional Chinese medicine guy for acupuncture, massage and moxibustion to treat all my hormonal shit. Its fucking weird and a little bit humiliating, but if it gets results, it's worth it. If you get a good person, it can be veey beneficial.

I think you have to be amenorrhoeic for a much longer time before they consider it a problem. What does your endocrinologist say?

  • Like wistfulmaiden said, irregular periods are a common side effect of PCOS. Are you not on the pill for your PCOS though? I would think that the doctor who diagnosed you with PCOS would prescribe something to ease your symptoms. I'm not sure if I have PCOS or not because I don't have any of the other symptoms like excess hair growth, acne, weight gain etc but something is definetly up with my hormonal system. I've had irregular, heavy bleeding since my period started when I was 13. I also remember an occasion when I was about 15 where I had a period for like 5 minutes and it didn't return for a few months. It sucks never knowing what the hell is going on. I'm 19 now and from just before I turned 17 till just before I turned 19, so two years, I was on the Depo shot cause its meant to stop all bleeding. I was so wrong. Turns out I react badly to progestrone only BC so I changed to the pill, been on it for 8 months and I skip the placebos so I never ever bleed. My quality of life has improved so much since I never bleed anymore. I still have occasional, very very light spotting every now and again but its never enough to actually need a pad or anything like that. Painless too and gone within an hour of when it started so honestly, its not even very noticable I'm just extra on edge about bleeding and always wondering when it will start but it never does thanks to the pill. Iwould suggest you give it a try.

Have you been checked for endometriosis? From what I know, that's more like PCOS bleeding with no other symptoms. Lots of blood and pain.

I have PCOS as well. The biggest symptom is irregular periods so I guess for us its normal. I take birth control pills because if I didn't Id bleed heavily for week one and lightly for week three.
    Fucked up hormones suck :(
