Is my mom a hypocrite?

Ever since I started high school, I've clashed with my mom. Or rather she just criticized everything I did. In my Junior year I started the year with three AP classes on my plate, AP Chemistry, AP Language, and AP Psychology. I dropped AP Language a week after school started because of stress at home. My mom told be to just drop all of them if I couldn't handle it. I stayed in the classes for the whole year but when I did want to drop, she told me "That is not how life works. You cannot just drop things because they are too hard." I understand where she is coming from but she told me if I can't handle it to drop...

Anyway another one is that when I would study late for my AP tests or doing homework, she would ask me why I'm up so late (only about 11pm) and give me the whole lecture about "You need your sleep" and all that... and I know I need my sleep, but how does she expect me to find success in my classes if I don't spend the time doing the work and studying.(AND she won't let me drop) They are hard subjects too. Lucky I stuck through it but I was just wondering if there is some other reason for my mom to act this way.

Things similar to these many times throughout high school these just came to mind.

Disclaimer: I work at a High School. A lot of parents don't understand the nature of education as it is today. It's about credits and numbers more so than it is about academic enrichment. Resumes, college applications. Period. End of Story.

Maybe you should explain to her the nature of AP classes. AP classes are essentially college courses and college courses require many hours of study. They are extra bells and whistles on a college applications but can also hurt you worse to take them if you are so overwhelmed with the work than you end up failing 1 to pass the other 2 or 3.

The issue isn't just difficulty, it is time management. Tell her that each class assigns a certain amount of homework and you know you can only do so much.

And yes, that is exactly how life works. When you go to a regular college, you totally have the option of trimming very difficult classes off your schedule and taking them at a later (and better) time. I have had to do this plenty. Didn't stop me from getting my degree. I hurt myself WORSE when I tried to take more classes than I can handle. That semester was pure hell.

If my understanding of "High School" is correct, it's really not that difficult*. It's more about molding you into a good little subordinate and not very much about making you smarter, or even giving you the ability to make yourself smarter.

*My understanding is it's a place students in the United States go from about 14-18 or so. And the "AP" classes are supposed to get you ready for "college". Even institutions of higher learning aren't really that difficult, unless of course you're not very bright to begin with... which would describe many Millennials.
