Is my deep water phobia normal?

Hello everyone, i wanted to explain my phobia to see whether anyone else has the same and knows what it is actaully known as and to see if im normal?
Im afraid of anything large under deep water, from large fish like whales and sharks to massive sunken ships and anchors, i dont know why but if i think about it or see a picture of something under water i freak out i start to become hot and sweaty and start to panic.
Lately i went to a aquirum for a couisns birthday, in which we entered a massive room filled with plastic life sized fish and mammels that live in the deep water, when seeing them i freaked and couldnt look and had to hold a friends hand, even when we were entering there was a life size drawing of a whale which freaked me right out.
Even when i was little i wouldnt like to bathe as i was scared their was a shark or fish in the water, does anyone have the same problem?

    It's called: Submechanophobia. It's normal.

I hate watching underwater. I can't swim and big mamals would scare me. Any movie about an ocean makes me uneasy

I'm scared if underwater shipwrecks to, eeeesh.... The sea in general makes me worry, pools are fine though, unless they have pool hoovers in them

I'm afraid of shallow water. Quarter inch or less. Horrifying.

I partially understand this. I too am afraid of deep water, I will never go on a ship and won't even enter the ocean; there is just too much that has yet to be unexplored, who knows what new species could be lurking in the deep.

You are correct :-) Hydrophobia is a fear of water, but large deep water is more so Agorophobia, I am lead to believe :-)

I thought fear of water was Hydrophobia? It's also the name for the fear of rabies so just be careful what context you use it in...

It's called Agorophobia. Which is a fear of open spaces and deep large volumes of water.

  • My daughter is 13 and won't go into the sea if it gets past her hips because she Is scared of something coming up and biting or grabbing her she has always been like this but one thing I don't get is she likes to watch documentaries about sharks but won't go in the water if there has been any shark incidents in the area whatsoever so her fear of sharks is taking over, so don't worry your not the only one:)
    Hope this helped:)
