Is music a drug?

I put on my headphones and within a minute, my mood was different, and perhaps different chemicals were in my brain. I felt different. Happy, philosophical, altruistic.

Is music a drug, given that a drug is any substance which enters the body and changes normal function? Does sound/music have substance and, if it does, does that make music a drug?

Hmm, that's interesting. I guess with that thinking quite a lot of things could be labelled as drugs.

You're talking about dopamine. Neither music nor pot "release" dopamine, it causes the brain to release it. And so do dairy products and meats, among other things.

    The more you know!

Sound is the result of friction or pressure through a medium, so no, it's not a physical substance, and not a drug in the strict sense of the word.

But who cares? Drugs aren't the only addictive things in the world.

No. Its actually psychological. Yes, music does have the amazing ability to divert your thoughts, but then again, i doesn't work with every one does it?

Yes, but on a mental and emotional level.

When I listen to it, I can zone out because nothing else matters.
    The eargasms are amazing:)

Actually, YES... sort of! When i'm forced not to listen to music (like when my iPod's discharged and i don't have the time to charge it before leaving for a trip) i tend to be more cranky... But that's just me.

Of course not. But you can be addicted to various activities that cause pleasant mental and emotional responses.

Music has a great effect on everyone, including myself. And yes, it's normal to consider it as a drug and for music to calm you down. I do find what you said interesting about chemicals in your brain. I'll research that.
