Is libertarianism as simple as it sounds?

Whenever I'm in a conversation about libertarianism, someone will point out that that is the best political party and belief system because it is "Socially liberal and fiscally conservative." Is libertarianism that simple?

I think, with every political party, the particular person in question may have slightly different beliefs than another person of the same affiliation.

I know Libertarians that believe in a welfare system and some that believe that all welfare and assistance programs should be funded strictly through charities and not the government. Both believe in gay-marriage and are pro-choice, however.

In general, though, Libertarians seem to be socially liberal and fiscally conservative, but to varying extremes.

That sounds like a great idea! Why don't they do this!

I'm not sure it's strictly a party but I'd agree it's a belief system. I wouldn't normally go with Wikipedia but they say something interesting. That it stands for freedom, liberty, and not too much interference from the state. What horrid ideals! ;)

Libertarians are just republicans who want to smoke pot.

I identify mostly with the libertarian movement/party/whatever. As far as I can tell, what you mentioned are the core ideas behind it. Of course there are varying degrees of people and beliefs in this system.

If it could be boiled down to one simple idea, it would be that government is a necessary evil and should be eliminated wherever possible. It's not really possible to function with none at all but the less the better.
