  • I don't know, maybe you could say they were proto-metal or something.

I checked who cares, but it's too gray of an area, much like the similar debate of how much of a Punk band The Ramones are. (Ironically, I noticed this poll as I was listening to Stairway To Heaven!)

It's really a matter of timing, and while I'll probably catch some hell for my opinion, but I personally consider Dio the first Heavy Metal band.

But really, Led Zeppelin is too cool of a band to wonder about what the hell their genre is!

I chose the first answer because they were in fact, heavily influenced by the blues, but they had a hard edge. I didn't say that they are a metal band because metal came in the 80's. BUT, Zep did have elements in their music that certainly spurred on the development of metal for sure. But a metal band? No.

  • I'd say they're classic rock, but Led Zep were more than that, they also had blues, funk, rock 'n' roll and early metal themes.

You have to remember that metal means something overall different these days.

They're just a classic rock band, an awesome one at that.

In today's terms, they would be classical rock. In those days, more like hard rock.

I don't think they could be considered as metal. Stainless Steel at best

  • Theoretically, they're a metal band. If you listen to some of their songs, then you'll be able to hear some metal riffs in them. They can be classified as classic rock, but in reality they were the ones that started metal. Without Led Zeppelin there would've been no metal, and if there was metal without them, it would really, really suck.

Led Zep one and two were actually out before black sabbath's debut. I will agree that sabbath was the first metal band, but when I listen to a song like dazed and confused, I feel like you can hear the genre being born, zep was doing something NO ONE was doing at the time.
