Is it weird that i didn't mind my parents monitoring me like this?

I recently had an ankle monitor removed after having worn it for my entire senior year of high school. Why was I wearing it? Allow me to explain.

It began in August with my parents and I watching this movie on TV. It was about a woman on house arrest with an ankle bracelet who’s been set up and she has to find a way to get out and prove her innocence despite being constantly monitored. And believe it or not, it wasn’t a Lifetime movie; lol! Anyway, my parents joked that they ought to get a monitor for me so they could keep track of where I’m at and to make sure I’m not out getting into trouble. This got me wondering…is it actually possible to buy or rent an ankle monitor or do only the courts have access to them? I did a little research online and found that there are actually companies that lease them. I showed this to my parents and they asked me how I’d feel about wearing one in exchange for a later curfew? I was curious as to what it would be like and a later curfew was fine with me, so I said yes.

After that, I was fitted with a GPS ankle monitor. They programmed it so they’d be notified if I ever tried to ditch school, but that was my only restriction. As promised, I got a later curfew and could hang out with my friends as late as I wanted without them having to worry. Even though they could keep tabs on my every move, I don’t think they did. I know they did check the data occasionally, as they once remarked that they knew I must’ve been speeding on my way to school that morning and to slow it down.

All in all, I think it was a pretty positive experience. I got more freedom and they had assurance that I was safe. Occasionally, I’d get a weird stare from someone who noticed the monitor, but that was it. I know most people wouldn’t have gone along with this, but I’m not weird for doing so, am I? I mean, what’s the harm?

The harm is you have sacrificed trust for slavery.
Anyway its a good idea - for your parents. It makes you look like the monitored pet though.
Still I agree it's likely inevitable of 24hr surveillance of our children one day. Privacy has long gone.

Its probably bullshit. The ankle tag you get from the courts is just so they can tell if youre in or out of your house. They cant track your location with it. Maybe its a different type of tag though.

Why didn't your school chums abduct you and drive you to the nearest black hood in order to scare the crap out of you as a hilarious practical joke?

Never heard of this before, but I say, I would have had some fund with it!

"Oh, this? (lifts up leg of pants to show monitor) Well, there was this one time, at band camp, and next thing you know I had a monitor and am listed as a sex offender. Go figure."

I don't know about normal, but I don't see a problem with the fact that it didn't bother you. To me, it sounds like you and your parents have a trusting relationship, and I think that is very healthy. (And this is coming from a non-parent!)
