Is it rude to call someone gay who is gay?

Is it rude to call someone gay who is gay? Like if someone says they like the same gender and you ask "Are you gay"? or is it only rude to call them fag/dyke. I believed gay was the more polite term isn't it?

No, it is never alright to call an homosexual gay 24
No, only if its a male homosexual may you say gay 11
Yes, gay is the more polite term 97

I'm gay and I don't care if people say I'm gay. Though I guess if someone referred to me only as "the gay" it might be slightly offensive since I'm more than just a gay person. Just like if you referred to someone as "whitey" or "blackie" all the time it would be a little off putting since they are more than their skin color. But you would have to be actually trying to offend me with the word, I doubt you could do it by accident.

If someone bites your head off just for saying gay, I think you're perfectly okay to just write them off as a jerk.

        • Why do you worship this woman? In what way has she made a difference in your life? You seem to care an awful lot about this woman. There must be a good reason for it.

  • Hhhhhhhh

Gay is fine haha. I'm a lesbian and my coworker was trying to say homosexual without using the word "gay" because she thought it was offensive. I told her Gay is fine of you mean homosexual. Gay is not a slur. And it's okay for straight people to say gay, as long as you said, for example, "Neil Patrick Harris is gay" which is a fact. He is homosexual. It's offensive if you say, "my math teacher gave me a detention, that's so gay." It's not okay to use gay to describe something when you mean bad. It is okay to say it if you mean literally homosexual.

    • Well I asked someone online if they were gay and I meant gay. Since they were describing a situation they were having. This other guy kept correcting me and telling me what I said was rude. Which irritated and confused me greatly. Since they kept saying I was intolerant to homosexual despite the fact I have befriended many.

      • Hhhhhhhh

I will say right now that befriending homosexuals doesn't give you a free pass or make it automatically okay for you to say whatever, but that guy is an idiot. And frankly saying "homosexual" every single time sounds so rigid and scientific and unsettling, like, it just draws attention to your discomfort with our identity. If you mean gay, say gay. Don't think about it too much. If you don't think about it too much and just say what I, a lesbian, am telling you is okay, then you know that I know that you don't care that much about my sexuality. That said I think if a gay person tells you they don't like it,I personally think you can still say it but I would still make an effort to not say it around them, even if they are being a sensitive Sally. Or maybe they have trauma attached to the term. We just don't know, so still try to respect that.

            • So how do you handle this type of incident? I really hate this type of behaviour? I mean for all they know I could be too. So how is it right to suddenly attack someone they assume isn't?

Depends what stage they are in. A fully realised, out of the closet gay would probably take no offence and just shrug it off after all their principles are in pride. One that is still closeted, it would be poor judgement and timing to announce it.
