Is it racist if it's not used in a racist context?

So i was having a casual conversation with my friends about a comedian and i said "He is one funny nigga"

A black man near me than called me a racist.

I am not a racist. Is what i said out of order though? did i say something racist even though i didn't use it in an offensive context?

Yeaaah, this is a touchy subject. I personally wish we didn't use this word at all because it was originally used as an insult. Now that a lot of black people use this word casually, people use the "Well they get to say it so why can't we?" line but that still doesn't justify it. Its like how a lot of guys get used to calling females as bitches as if its an acceptable and cool thing to say but I'd never do that unless someone deserved that name. I've seen white, asian and other people using nigga in sentences too with no intention for harm, just conforming to how the word is used today but that is still wrong.

There was a teacher who got negative attention on the news for calling a black guy a nigga and tried to justify it by saying that he heard them say it all the time but deep down, and given the teacher's race and knowledge about history, I'm sure he knew that it was best not to say it instead of trying to pull a joke. Just because a lot of us say it, and we shouldn't, does not mean you can use that as a free pass to use it and expect the same results. If we didn't use the word so casually at all and someone used it, would people still get confused about its meaning? If someone called any race a racial slur, is it ever okay?

Only if it's the French we are insulting. Blatant French racism is always on the tv and everyone thinks it's hilarious.

It's is not racist, if it isn't racist. If you are not a racist and you used the word 'nigga' as a slang word for black person without intending for it to be offensive, then no it is not racist.

It may, however, be a bit tactless. The word may be associated quite strongly with racism and slavery in people's minds, and if so, it can be a bad idea to use it around people you don't know, who don't know how you are using the word.

The other person near should not have called you a racist but should have said that some people might take offence at the use of that word.

you can't control how others react/respond to things you say. it doesn't matter what your intentions are, so consider that next time you use language that could offend others. and then be prepared to own what you say if necessary, or just don't say it.

Stupid racism. I think it was UNI students who first brought this up.
Its ironic but the ENTIRE of dark skinned (or whatever politically correct label) people don't turn me on. Is that racist? No?
What about if I said that Irish guy is funny he makes me laugh. Racist again, No?
What about if I said that black guy is funny? No again?

OH, but using that 'N' word, OMG the poor guy will think you're calling him a slave. ? Really? You know slavery stopped a long time ago, most people were born AFTER it happened, Let It GO.

Not racist, get use to it.

    • If I called you a honkey in a room full of black people, and I just so happen to look at for I while before I said it, but I didn't mean it in a racist way, would you be pissed, or hurt, would say something or would you just walk away.

Cracker would be the proper and more offensive derogatory term for people of the Caucasian persuasion. Honky just makes me think of my sweet sweet love for George Jefferson!

Anyway would I take offense to it? No.
But it 'seems' there's a whole lot of history of slavery and murder (including KKK) to take into consideration here. But even with ALL that, its time 'blacks' just gave it a rest. We are all human, and that's that.

Edit// Oh I said 'seems' because its so far in the past now, that we have to actually teach people what happened, even reminding them has gone.

          • Did you forget racism still exists? White people still black people, niggers, it ain't nigga but it's pretty damn close. I'm not a black panther or a black Muslim or anything like that, but I know racial injustice is still brought up against black people in America

and no, I'm not saying that it happens as much as it did decades before, and I'm not saying that black people don't commit racist acts. So spare me.

But, have you ever considered that those black people who may have endured racial oppression from white people might react bitterly a white person who use that word?

So call it splitting hairs, or whatever you want just answer the damn question.

Racism does still exist in some INDIVIDUALS, but its not whites against blacks anymore.
The bitterness was against the past, its not against a white boy who has now grown up to be a man and has nothing to do with any of those horrible events.

Seems to me that a lot of gangs were formed in America, I don't know why? They seem to be fighting with people they have nothing against with. Its time people start to grow up and grant a little respect for the ones that fought for equality, because these days its NORMAL to be equal.

Racism still exists out of ignorance. In school there are blacks and whites studying together even getting married. Its 2013 the space age era. Discrimination between color, sex, and even religion is gone, except for the ones that want to continue living in the past. Let it go already.

It's controversial I think. So it's really better to avoid using that word altogether.

I'm black and would be slightly bothered if I heard a non-black say 'nigga'.

I think it's only racist if you feel it, if you hate the race you're using the term against. I've heard people say racist things, but known that they were not racist on the inside. Or at the very least doubted the things they were saying.

I wouldn't say its "racist". To me its just discomforting. I honestly don't get bothered when other black people say it because its become a brotherly term in the black race. Its hard to explain and very hard for most whites to understand. The word doesn't hold the same brotherly connotations when said by someone white, even if they meant it as such.

I feel that there shouldn't be so much concern about it.

It's very racist. I would never say the N word, except if reading an extract from a history book, or singing to Elvis Costello's sing "Oliver's Army". But I wouldn't ever say it as an insult, ever

I haven't thought much about it, but yeah I guess it does depend on the context it's used in. That's my opinion though. I don't have anything against any groups of people but I once called a celebrity I dislike a "limey." That's not as derogatory as the ones that refer to skin colour though. And I said it to degrade her, not a whole group. She doesn't annoy me as much now, so if you by any chance know who I'm talking about, don't attack me!

I'll use it with my friends and all, hell we make fun of eachother on every stereotype possible, but in actual context, in public around people I don't know? Never. I don't think it's "racist" since words change with time, but you can't use the excuse "oh well they do it too".

An old southern woman, a friend of my uncles said "Negro, coloured, African American, black - who knows what the hell they want to be called anymore!"

Although I don't like using terms like "white" and "black" to describe people, despite its i accuracy it seems like the only non offensive way to refer to others.

When black people stop using the word 'nigger' then so should every other ethnicity, it's not fair to have different rules for different people.

If anyone follows Hip-Hop culture at all, they would know "nigga" isn't racist. In fact, it's just another word for friend or homie. People always confuse it with "nigger" which is racist. I know nigga came from it, but it is not used racially. I have black friends who encourage their white friends to use it. It's all over rap music too.

Not really, because black comedians use the word nigga whereas. Well I've never seen a Chinese comedian but Chinese rarely call themselves chinks compared to blacks who call themselves nigga. The op most likely called him a nigga because that is what the comedian himself was using.

Racist is racist no matter how you put it. However blacks now use the racist term to identify each other like "Well they think were "Term" but you saying it would probobly come off as hateful. Since in a way its to identify a sense of them against you. However sometimes people are racist jokingly and its funny but there is a line between funny and insulting and when you cross that line it gets annoying. You cross the line when its excessive or were its obviously hateful.
