Is it racist?

I was at work and I was speaking with a colleague. I said, "I saw this black lady--" and she stopped me. She then asked, "black?! Are you a racist?!

She told me that you could only call "them" black if you're close to that particular individual.

I then explained my perspective: I don't call black people African-Americans for the same reason I don't call white people European-Americans. They are too far removed from their respective lineages to share that identity. Also, I know of black people who genuinely dislike being called African-Americans for the reason stated above, though that could just be a fringe group.

I also feel that saying African-American seems like you're trying to hard to not appear as a racist.

Is calling an American that has a lineage which leads back to Africa "black" racist?

Many of the coloured races are very racist. I live in Thailand (I'm a retired Londoner) and the Thais are far more racist than even the KKK!

Racism is preferring one race over another or thinking one race is superior to another. Your friend has little idea of what racism is.

We all know what the offensive racist words are and its not "black".
I say "black" "white" ect...so is it racist to call white people "caucasian?" Do I care that much? Ah, no.
I agree, if someone was born in Africa(or Italy or Poland) then they are African/Italian/Polish-American. Otherwise were just different colored Americans.
She is probably one of those annoying super pc individuals who is hated by all races lol.

Sigh no it's not, if the term "black" Is racist then how come "african-american" isn't? Think about it not all people from africa are black so why is it considered racist? There is also the argument of that black people can be more so "racist" towards other races but if a white person says one little thing you get shit for it.

    Ignorant.

maybe the point was why you had to specify the color of the skin for what you were saying?
If it had no bearance, perhaps you should of just said a lady, I mean why bring ethnicity into it?
Still I agree with the comments above that your co worker overreacted but I just wanted to make sure I understood the post properly in order to give an accurate response. You need context with things like this.

Not racist at all. It's not insulting, it's a fact. Black people are black.

*sigh* I don't think it matters. No one bothers to take the time to call me "Caucasian American". It takes to long, and black is more simple. As a matter of fact I don't even take the time to mention someones race because it's not a big deal to me.

As far as I know, "black" (when used as a descriptor, and not with the clear intention to insult) isn't offensive nowadays. That said, though, I'm white, and don't live in an English-speaking country, so I might be completely wrong, and if so, I apologize!

I don't think it's racist to mention somebody's skin colour. It's a fact. They're black. Obviously if you use it in a derogatory way it would be racist. But sometimes mentioning skin colour at all is completely not relevant to the story being told so I don't know why some people do it, but I still wouldn't call it racist. However, if you know a black person who is offended when you say that they're black, it's best to just try not to say it around them, out of politeness at least.
