      I have three laptops, there is a case in Latin American type laptops(the one with the ñ), that Dell doesn't always put the @ in the same place.
      In my latitude, the @ is shift-A, in my inspiron it's shift-2, and in my toshiba it's shift-Q... so she wasn't used to the alt-A.
