I hate it when I go into a store and the salesgirl is so happy,I mean you can tell its fake. What the hell are you so upbeat for? Am I crazy ??
Why would you prefer it if she punched you in the face and told you to go fuck yourself?!?!?! Because that's how they feel half the time (you can see it when they're not pretending to be friendly lol.)
But yeah, it's normal.
I like it when they're nice. Even if it's fake, it's better than getting rude service!
I was a saleswoman. For the most part we are not being fake the job is more fun and easy when you are nice or start converstions with people. It is also a big part of the job "friendly customer service" was a must at my job. Plus people tend to complain about you if you are rude or mean.
Yes sometime we are very fake when we are nice to you but chances are its because someone (maybe you) just made our job 1000x harder. "oh here il just leave these 5000 items on the floor here k bye" "oh hey i left all the items i just tryed on rolled up in a ball on the floor of that change room have fun" "well let me hang everything inside out so you have the spend extra time fixing it" "hey i didnt know what size my own body was can you go grab ever item i have in medium and larges" sometimes you have to paint that smile on you face or you would go to jail for murder.
I'm sure a part of the job description is to come across as personable even when you feel like shit. I work in a cafe, and I have some day's when I really don't feel like being there,(ladies, you understand when you get cramps during your period.) but I try to put on a smile anyway to come across more warm to the customers. A lot of times the customers are having a pretty crummy day too, and need somebody to smile. It might have been the only smile they got from somebody all day. If their day was that rough. Sometimes while generating positivity, you get back positivity.
I would rather have that situation that a grumpy one who wont even look at you or say anything, slam your stuff in a bag and say NEXT.
When working, they are expected to act happy and cheerful even if they are not.

I get angry when they are standoffish bitches who act like they hate their job and have other things to do. Ugh that makes me so mad- I'm sure a nice normal person would love to have that job.
I hate it too. But punching them only ends you up in the drunk tank. Even when your solber.
Why are sales girls so happy? A better question might be: Why is she working for a company with ass customer service policies that make her look like a bimbo? I worked in a department store, briefly, in my teens. Feel very, very sorry for anyone who works in Retail or in any Hospitality Industry. They trade in their self respect and dignity for a few coins.
