Is it normal when you move to a new place to become depressed?

I recently moved across the country to go to college in California. I go to a beautifull school and live in a house with a bunch of kids my age. However I feel I've completely changed as a person since moving. I used to have a fun outgoing and bubbly personality but now I always feel mellow. When my friends here go out and party I never want to. It's so weird because I used to drink and smoke and party all the time at home and I had really good self confidence. Now I just always feel lonely even when there's tons of kids around. I complety quit smoking and rarely drink, all I want to do is eat and sit around. It really sucks and I just want to have a good time here but I don't know what to do. Is this normal?

    Normal.
I live in Australia and moved from the country to the city. I cut ties with everyone from home to start a complete new life. I had no friends here, started my new job and found it hard to meet new people.
I started college part time 5 weeks ago and after 5 months of living here I only started to like it a couple of weeks ago.

You can't change the location you live at the moment so why not just try and enjoy it. That's what helped me :)

You are most likely just adjusting to the new environment/people. I'm sure that once you settle in you will feel better. If after a few weeks you still feel depressed, maybe you could talk to someone. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon!

P.S. When you do start feeling better, please don't start smoking again :)

    Homesickness, new environment.

Give it time, venture outside by yourself, then with your house mates/friends.

    You'll be fine.

Yes it is very normal. I did the same thing. I moved across the country to California. After 3 months I was ready to leave, I lost a ton of weight and was really sad. Just give it a little more time, you will settle in. I ended up living there for four years and fell in love with it. I moved back after the four years and miss it so much. I wish I was there now. Moving is a big step and sometimes can make you feel out of place. You should keep a journal and everyday tell your self all the things you are grateful for, it will make you feel so much better and see the brighter side of things. You will be ok.
