Is it normal when my friend comes up to me and asks this?

My best friend and I have been talking back and forth. Two years ago we both figured out that we liked each other. No matter how hard we try, even if we use the " Never talk to me again" card, we can't stop talking to each other. We can't stay apart from each other. Anyways around 6 months after he told me he liked me, he said he didn't anymore. He said he just wanted to be friends, which was completely okay with me. So we both agreed it was better that way and we lived on. And now it's been a year and a half since then, and we both figured out that we like each other, yet again. He said he still wanted to be friends and I'm all for that. On November 28th, it was a regular day at school. We always talked at each other's lockers and carried on conversations in class, just as our normal routine. Around lunch time I said I wanted to dye my hair to him, and he complained and tried to convince me not to, but I still want to. After 6th period he comes up to my locker and asks randomly ," What would you say if I asked you out?" I say , " Well... what happened to just being friends?" "I'm just wondering what you would say," Is this normal?? Any suggestions at what he's thinking?

he seems a bit confused. he is a little shy after all that & can't ask you straight so he is using a decoy.

    Hmm, marrying your childhood sweetheart.

OK, I may be looking too far ahead, but if you have an on and off relationship over many years, it may be that you both want to first try other people first before you both agree that you are meant for each other.

I say continue on the same.
ie Go out with him if you want, then if you break up, know its likely not forever :)
