Is it normal when i start to fall asleep...

Sometimes when I start to fall asleep I'll start dreaming about falling and when I hit the ground it scares the shit out of me and I jump like 5 feet out of bed (well maybe not 5 feet) but it's still pretty scary...this happens usually like 20 minutes after I lay down. Does anyone else experience this?

Everyone experiences that. Your body has a natural defense in which it will, for lack of a better term, jump start itself when it feels as though it may be dying. When you are falling asleep and losing consciousness your heart rate slows and periodically, your brain will become confused and will signal to your muscles "jump" all at once. Because you're already half asleep, you interpret that sensation as falling...or landing after the fall.

    It is totally normal.

i have heard it mentioned that this is a thing lef over from when we were monkeys and living in trees. If we fell asleep in a tree we would jump out of sleep because we dont wanna fall out of the tree. Who knows though?

i dont know if your actually talking about this, but it sounds like your describing what happens right before you have an OBE. like when your half/partly asleep and you suddenly start feeling like your falling really fast and it jolts you awake. and this is what happens when your spirit is jolted back into you body, i've had that weird falling sensation plenty of times before

The thing about dreaming is the passing of time is really out of whack. Your brain will create an explanation for what happens to you physically in a way that you will perceive as logical and preemptive, as though your mind knew that something was about to happen. Its not just the jerk that often awakens most people just as they are beginning to sleep. I once was dreaming there was a loud thunder clap outside that woke me up, but just before I was fully awake, I realize that something had occurred in my dream that accounted for the noise that made sense, both logically and fit the passing of events in the continuum of time as I was perceiving it in my dream state.
