I similar issue, but I think that it is caused by my scoliosis. The situational arrangement of my bed is a little strange and imbalanced. My pillows are especially out of shape and contorted. It is very difficult to get in a comfortable position. Depending on the position I sleep in, there are times where It feels like my side is floating above my futon. I can't sleep on my left side without having breathing issues. Sometimes, this happens on the right side too. The best position is for me to prop up my pillows and sleep on my back in a slightly twist. Fully sleeping on my back would result in my tongue flipping back causing my airway to further become restricted. This position especially seems to make me prone to experience sleep paralysis. If I were you, I'd see a doctor. Good luck.
Same problem was with me some years before...may be you are not sleeping in a right posture.
It can sometimes be caused by dehydration, or something called Pleurisy. Try drinking more water or go see a doctor.
I'm slim but sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night feeling I can't breathe if I'm laying on my back. Doesn't happen if I'm laying down when I'm awake though.
I feel that way sometimes. This is why I never go to sleep lying flat on my back, although it seems reasonably safe. The cause is either anxiety or intense relaxation, I'm not sure.
