Is it normal when guys use "lol"?

Is it normal when guys type lol, omg, wtf or other texting abbreviations? It kinda gets on my nerves when I text my friends and they always put "lol" at the end of there message. I normally try to spell every word out and not abbreviate anything, it just looks better. Is it ok for girls but not guys, ok for both or just stupid for anybody? Please leave your thoughts.

I even had a guy send me a work email today with a TBH in it. Where it gets corny and weird is when people say them out loud.

I saw an emoticon on the back of a product box one time. To me it seemed very unprofessional. SMH <--- Oh, the irony :)

To me, it all depends on the context. I did work with one guy who would say LOL and would even refer to people by their email addresses. "Lol! Have you seen ASmith today?"

What an odd behavior. Any idea why he did those things?

Oh and I know this is random, but you should put up a profile pic sometime :)

I think this guy thought he was really cool, but that definitely wasn't the case. Before we all got wireless headsets, he had this big over-the-head thing that had a cable and a clip to clip it on your shirt. He had an extension cable for it and he'd pace back and forth in his office like he was really important. When he wasn't on the phone, he'd disconnect it and keep the headset on as he wandered around the building. He did that up until we had a staff meeting. The VP asked him, "What are you doing with that ridiculous thing on your head?" He laughed it off like he realized it was a joke, but that was just how he was.

I could put a picture up, but I'd rather not let random strangers have the ability to identify me and also, I don't like the negative feedback as I've seen on this site and others that comes from having a picture up.

              Wow, what a weirdo XD

Yeah, that is completely understandable. You don't have to put a picture of yourself up though. It could be anything (mine is a dog for instance). You could put something on the description too if you wanted to. Of course you don't have to... I only bring it up because I am starting to recognize your comments among the regulars and I like to see something on people's profiles :)

It's totally normal for everybody. I prefer to spell out everything but if the person I'm chatting with likes to use "wtf, lol..." then that's her/his choice.

I hardly text, i only do it if i get a text from someone else first.

the only other time is with my friend who cant hear.

even then, I usually spell out my words.

  • I don't mind it as long as they really are laughing out loud. What really is annoying though is people who write "lawl, lewl" or some other fucking lame word to pretty much say "lol" What the fuck does "lawl" even mean?

  • It's understandable if it's on texts (Mobile phones) because it would take longer to type the whole message if they decided to type it all out. Although, some people have just got in the motion of doing it everywhere, not just texting. It doesn't irritate me unless it makes what they're saying unreadable.

I use lol often and emoticons too. It portrays an air of non-seriousness that I like and think is important for sites like this. I even spell it out every once in a while under certain circumstances. "Laugh out loud" sounds a bit sarcastic when spelled out :)

I do NOT text though. That is what texting does to English; it encourages short, thoughtless, abbreviated, slang messages that have no real depth or meaning. It makes me so sick sometimes when I try to have a conversation with somebody online who uses their phone to write back. It's not even close to the same type of response that is capable with a dedicated computer keyboard.

The conversations are almost one-sided. I hate the specific way in which cell phones are taking communication by letters.

I honestly think it would be weird to type out laugh out loud..it's meant to be lol in my opinion. The other abbreviations are alright too b/c everyone knows them and who wants to text all of that?? It's when people type smh or dtf that annoys me because not everyone knows what it means. I have to google it and that takes up my time. XD

I always use smileys and lol at the end of my messages so that the person knows I'm not being serious. Sometimes you can misinterpret what people say.
