Is it normal website ideas.

I would like to hear your ideas for this website. Be they little or tall, big or small, anything and everything, all ideas are welcome! Even if there's no chance of it ever happening, I still think it will be interesting to know what kind of ideas you have/had for this place. So let's hear them! :)

I'll start:

I had an idea one time to be able to save a potential post as a draft. Just like you can do with an email really. Just go to submit post and type in your details and stuff, then, if you're not finished, there could be a little button that says "save post as draft" or something. Then you could go back and finish your post idea later! What do you think?

I like your idea. 18
I don't like that idea. 6
I have an idea too! 0

    My Idea #1:

Give the search bar more attention!

I think it'd be good to move it underneath the main logo on the front page - give it a sort of Google prominence. People wondering about something will be encouraged to use it first before posting a question.

Related posts will automatically appear somewhere alongside the search bar (rather than redirecting to another page) as they do when you are submitting a post.

Advantages = Fewer repeat posts & more activity on older posts (instead of an ever expanding archive of dead posts).

Older posts being more active as a consequence could mean those posts make it back on to the front page in the Most Popular Today. That means older conversations and topics are re-invigerated by a new audience.

    • I still think this is a great idea.

Your idea already sounds like a feature that is available on email accounts.

    • Yeah, it's very similar. I would like it if it was integrated into this website though. That way i wouldn't have to open my email account ever time i think of a post idea.

There was an idea floating around once about having an IIN groups feature, and TheManagement made a thread about it which is here http://isitnormal.com/poll/groups-feature-for-iin-108134/ I shot down the idea with reckless abandon at the time, but I'm not so heavily against the principle of it now (although there were big problems with key details of it). If it was done properly it could be interesting. This isn't a vote of support for the feature or anything, in case anyone gets that impression (I think as a community IIN ain't broke, so, therefore, don't fix it :P).

I like your "save as a draft" idea. That would be useful if I needed to write something long or lost my train of thought. Currently I save drafts in a Word document, but not having to leave the site would be a nice convenience.

Disthing's idea is good too, although I don't mind some repeating questions. It's nice to have a good flow of interesting topics come up even if they'rn't new ones, but there are some people who would get more, better answers from using the search bar. Having less old questions might stimulate people to come up with exciting new questions which we wouldn't have had otherwise.

I'll come back if I think of any good ideas, but at the moment I've managed to write 3 paragraphs without actually getting stuck into the question so I'd better just stop typing :P

    • I went to the link. Seems like the intention of the idea was good, but I could see much potential for abuse too. I think it would likely cause separation among the members here, and that certainly wouldn't be good for the whole 'community vibe' thing we have going right now.

Yeah, I often get ideas for posts but I don't always have the time/effort for the refinement they need in order for me to be satisfied with posting them. Quite the dilemma, lol.

Do you have any ideas yourself?

I've thought about it for a few days, but my ideas well is dry. The main recurring problem with IIN as far as I can see is that stories take a long time to be moderated and sometimes the wrong ones make it through (although I've not heard anyone complain about that for a while, so maybe it's been solved). As far as I can see the only way to solve that problem is by getting more people to moderate more often, which probably means throwing money at the problem.

It would be nice if there was some way to keep a list of stories you wanted to reply to later, like a button you could click to add to add the story to your "Comment Later" list. A bit like a favourites list but for stories you've not commented on yet, I suppose. A bit like the "Water Later" button on YouTube. I'm not sure I'm explaining very well :P

EDIT: Oh, and there should be a way to block notifications from certain members, not just messages. About half of my notifications are from suckonthis9 and I have no intention of replying to those. I'm only half joking :P

Your link sent me to a post called "Is it normal to enjoy being hurt?" :S Haha.

You already know that I like your idea, and I think it would come in handy. Also! I'm assuming I know who you are, but you know how you brought up that the little arrows at the top right corner do the same thing as the "Next" button? In that they both send you to another post. Well, with the "Next" button (let's say you've pressed "Next" 20 times and ended up on all those different posts) if you press the back button you go to the previous post, whereas with those two little arrows you go back to the home page (assuming that you were initially at the home page and then clicked the arrows about 20 times)! Did that make any sense:P? I feel pretty sad for knowing this:(.

As for the ideas, I think I had one, but I've forgotten it. I like the idea of having a search bar for your own comments, although that's probably pointless to most people.

    • Sorry about the faulty link. I sent you a new one that should be good if you want to check it out. There really is a ton of fantastic ideas that have already been implemented.

I have absolutely no idea what you mean with the arrows and whatnot. I never really use those much at all. I am sure it's a good idea you have for it though :)

Ah, no, it's just me and Spacey had had a conversation about not knowing the difference between the two, so I thought I'd mention it, since I found a very small difference:P. I thought you were Spacey, although as per usual, I guess wrong:P.

I can see the value in this but I fear it would create more elaborate trolls.

I wrote this story a little while ago.

        http://isitnormal.com/story/iin-i-wish-everyone-could-vote-on-stories-148247/

And now that I'm thinking, it should be stars, not thumbs. Rate a story's entertaiment value with 4 out of five stars...no, sheep. :) Make the ratings about the OP and not just the comments.

And to expand on that, do you see those flags at the bottom of the question? What if we could see the number of times people clicked "lame" or "off topic" and maybe add some new flags.

It would allow them to spend more time on their story.
