Is it normal watching movies in english subtitles?

I'm an english speaking american living in the U.S, but don't really like our movies as much as I do the French, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, etc. When I get the chance, I watch them in english subs on youtube. But when I tell my friends this, they kinda look at me as if I have eight heads.

One night I bought a french movie, and told my sister and brother in law(who's a huge movie buff) about it, asked them if they wanted to watch it. They asked me what it was about beforehand; I explained it to them. They seemed eager to see it, but as soon as I said it was in english subs, they laughed and said they didn't wanna watch it. Is it too hard for people to read and watch at the same time? Whats everyones problem? Is watching movies in english subs normal?

    Subbed movies are always better, dubbed movies usually have the worst voice acting.

    LOL. If they can't read and watch the film at the same time they're clearly retarded and you should murder them with a knife knife knife

    Totally agree! I watch a lot of asian cinema and anime, so subtitles go without saying. Cause at first, many shows that I wanted to watch didn't have english dub, but these days -I hate it.

    I think the original language adds a lot to any film or show.

      Im with you on that, with the Exception of The Dragon Ball Series. The (Funimation) English dub is done very well, and most of the characters actually talk normally, and they match up almost perfectly, although The announcer for the world martial arts tournament and some background charcters kinda sound like the dad from speed racer (rather hilariously too).

      Still, though DBGT is hilarious in the original Japanese

        A lot of anime on Netflix comes from Funimation. Gotta admit -they do a pretty good job. I watched the first season of Gunslinger Girl in English and it didn't even bother me..

    Sometimes it's hard to hear what they're saying so I'll put on subtitles. I think it is kinda difficult to read and watch at the same time, but if you really want to see a foreign film, it's required.

    I sometimes watch it in subtitles, but usually cause i cant understand what a character was saying at a point.

    I'm exactly the same, I read a few lines of the story think "ooh that sounds good" then I see "In Korean/English subs" just puts me off, Although I always have subtitles on when I'm watching regular TV, I feel like I can't hear it, no matter how high the volume is lol.

    I like to watch movies in English without subs so I can train my own skills since I'm not native speaker but I mostly watch Japanese/Korean dramas with English subs anyways.

    If the acting is particularly good, I find myself sometimes taking my eyes off the subtitles too long! I'll often have to go back and rewatch the scene.

    Otherwise, I generally have no issues with subtitles. What I find is, a few minutes in, I'm not even aware I'm reading.

    From my experience, if a person has doubts about watching with subtitles, they generally dont have much experience of foreign film. A few minutes in, and I'm sure they'll have forgotten, too ;)

    I'm not too keen watching movies with subtitling due to the attention it can take away from the movie.

    The funny thing, when I was a kid and only learning English I still find it annoying even though I struggled at times to understand it.

    If I were a better reader and were willing to read the subtitles, I would love to sit down and see "Pan's Labrynth".
