Is it normal waking up wanting to die?

No I'm not going to kill myself, but I constantly get into these moods where I'm so depressed I can't help but think about it. This happens almost every morning but also in the middle of the day. I could be fine one minute then my mood suddenly plummets to the point where it physically hurts. So I ask do people get like this or is this not normal?

  • Yes, people get like that now and then in their lives. It is common, even though it's not a healthy state to be in.

It makes those times easier if you have a strong and *supportive* network of family and/or friends to help you through it. I don't mean that they have to talk you out of being depressed, or listen to you mope for months on end, but just being around them and having them accept your presence unconditionally while you're down in the dumps makes a huge difference.

If you don't have people who will willingly be supportive of you during these times in your life, it can help to pay someone (a counsellor) to do it for you.

If you are depressed, then sometimes it can be worse in the morning because of low serotonin levels.
Even if you feel fine when it comes to afternoon/evening time, it may still be worth checking to see if you are actually depressed.
Some people could say you just aren't a morning person. But if you feel like you want to die (even if you won't go that far to kill yourself) there isn't something right there.
A few things that help is when you wake up in the morning, DO NOT stay in bed, or else you'll lie there feeling depressed. Get up and do something. If you don't have a job, get one, or try. May be get a hobby to concentrate on. Find something that makes you happy and makes life worth living for you. Distraction is a big help. And so is medication/therapy if you want to go further with this too.

    • I've been getting up right when I wake up the past week. :) I know what you mean. Some days if I don't get up or if I lie back down I'll stay there till late afternoon. :/

I have a job. Sometimes I go to work in a great mood (talk to all my coworkers, customers, smile, hyper) then two hours later I feel extremely depressed and anxious (can't even say hello to customers, almost have panic attacks, feel like crying for no reason, angry).

The thing is whether I'm in a good mood or bad mood I find it hard to concentrate. I sit there trying to read a book or study and I just can't.

That's great that there has been an improvement the past week! Be proud of yourself. You could also think about treating yourself when your day goes right.
If you are depressed, it is normal for your mood to change very quickly. Also not being able to concentrate is normal. I've been through it all before and come out the other side.
It looks like getting to the bottom of this can help you. To find out why you are depressed. Something traumatic in your past, a family history of mental health issues or a chemical inbalance of serotonin in your brain.

it used to happen a lot to me, like when i got bullied in school :/

Next time that you're really happy, remember it and think, next time that I'm really sad, i'll remember that in not too long im going to end up happy like that again. have faith in that thought and you'll be set. works for me

Hmm.. there's a high risk in that, but maybe killing yourself and failing really helps. I survived 2 suicide attempts. Got a little bit of a kidney problem, totaled car and lotsa pretty awesome memories. When you hit the bottom to the point that your life has no value you learn a bunch of things if you survive.

So, before you all thumb down this comment -I'm NOT suggesting anything, or advocating suicide attempts. But I do have to admit, that even though, in general, my life is way shittier than it used to be -I'm pretty content living it. No happy pills or shrinks.

Get a job. If you're a student, study hard. If you're not both, then clean your house.

I had/have depression and it's not something you can help or control but I find the best way to explain is that your stuck inside a room with no escape and you feel so helpless basically I'm not going to get into it but I suggest maybe go do some research see if you have any of the symptoms then talk to your GP because depression is VERY real <3 best of luck

Most humans act like stupid primitive apes! All you people think about is mating and fighting! You're only animals with an iPhone. And don't tell me "oh but we are animals". We can go past that, I have!

Yes, sex will help. If this does not help though, you may have a chemical imbalance and may need some medication to assist with this negative feeling.

I'm sorry, and I'm not angry with you, but this "chemical imbalance" crap is just that... Crap.

OP: You don't need medication. PLEASE exhaust ALL other options before even *thinking* about meds. Eat healthy food and begin reducing you junk food and soda intake until it is nonexistent. Resist the urge to consume loads of caffeine, and limit alcohol intake. Eat three square meals a day, and snack on high energy foods all day (like no-chocolate trail mix and fruit), this will prevent sluggishness and sleeplessness. Make sure to get 7-8 hours of good sleep every night at the same time every night. (Set those alarms, it does make a difference when you get into a healthy pattern.) Exercise a little each day, take the stairs, park a little farther away, etc, etc. Load an MP3 player full of positive, upbeat, energetic, bad-ass music, and then CRANK that shit when you feel your worst. Be insane, punch shit, eat a pillow, cry until you bleed, scream if you must, but do NOT bottle the negative energy up, let it GO. Avoid depressing people and fun-sucking vampires as much as possible, and surround yourself with positive people. Avoid gossip and needless drama at all costs. Have passionate, meaningful sex with your lover. Ask them to treat you extra special when you feel even a little down, and then return the favor. There are even specific foods and drinks out there that have even been scientifically proven to lift your mood like things high in Vitamin D and Omega 3's.

That's about all I can think of for now, but there's plenty, PLENTY of help and information out there. Shrinks and meds are not the first, or the twentieth option. I feel really passionate about issues with depression, mostly because I wish I could live a lifestyle like I have described above. I try my hardest to, but it's sad because it's cheaper to buy junkie food than real, healthy food. I also work a night-shift job, which I'm trying to get away from, and it doesn't help much either. Good luck OP!

Medication can mean so many things. Do not be narrow minded with the word. All what you implied about changing diet and taking vitamins is all chemicals. Not all chemicals are bad for the human body. Serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine all occur natural in the brain. There is a possibility of imbalance if other factors are not a problem for this person. I agree to try everything else before medication but with my medical background, there are some cases that people do need medication to help release these hormones.

"Not all chemicals are bad for the human body."

I did not say this, nor did I ever imply it. However, it the OP were to go to a doctor they would probably be prescribed "medication" that would increase serotonin levels unnaturally. This is unhealthy for the brain and either causes or WORSENS any "chemical imbalance" that there might have nor might not have been there. I understand that there are some cases where "medication" may help, but they are usually few and far between. We have a society that dictates we should have a "pill for every ill". I hope your medical background does not teach you this, for it is flawed.

No it does not teach me this. You should be aware he may be one of those extreme cases. I did offer him an alternative before even implying medication. Medication can also be herbal as you have stated before. Diet, exercise, and setting should be changed first to see if he has a positive response to that treatment. If all else fails, medication may be necessary. I never wish to put anyone on anti-depressants or any pill that alters mood.
