Is it normal to yawn and sneeze during the act of retching to vomit?

As soon as I have that gag reflex (retch) one does when they vomit, (It happens at that moment when I gag and my stomach suddenly tightens to purge vomit) at that very second I have uncontrollable yawning (btw, big wide yawn I can't stop) AND AT THE SAME EXACT MOMENT of gagging and yawning I SNEEZE! All simultaneous...and when my body tries to gag/retch again after (trying to expel)...BLAM the yawn and sneeze! Not BEFORE the gagging & NOT AFTER..during..only while the retch/gag is in in motion.

As you can imagine it is quite a display. It's scary too. I can't complete a full retch to purge and I begin to panic. I fear choking (I have once) because the stuff is coming up but my mouth is stretched wide open in a yawn(Which closes off the back of my throat and BLAM I sneeze so essentially the "stuff" makes it halfway up my throat and then cannot expel due to the stoppage.

Sounds crazy doesn't it? I am 40 yrs old and up until a year ago this would have been unheard of! I can't even find this in google. But it is now this way, every time.

Here is what I think: Perhaps there is a signal misfiring in my brain during this moment. (It's pretty traumatic on the vessels ect.I would imagine..to retch like that?) What else could be going on? Has ANYONE heard of this? Is this NORMAL?

I have this exact thing happen to me for the last few years! I am 35 and I do have some lung and heart issues. Mostly I get low blood oxygen and it seems to happen when I am not breathing deep enough. I also have noticed it tended to happen when I took pain medication but I am not sure if that is really the cause. I do have some nervous system issues like involuntary motions and occasional shaky hands. Does any of this sound familiar?

I have been experiencing this same shite for a couple of months now. Funny enough it started after eating McDonald's for the first time in 6 months. Funny enough I decided to Google it and found this site and started reading your description of it and started laughing and thinking okay someone else has the same crap to deal with. I guess my biggest concern with it logically thinking about it is that it would be a problem with the central nervous system. I've never had a history of ticks or off motions in my life. I have some health issues that have gotten worse over the years mainly with my back and blood flow and wonder if maybe these are having an effect on my central nervous system. Would love to know if you were having any of those similar issues.

I can't believe I found someone who has the same thing happen to them. I see a neuroo for more. Trorubling symptoms and wanted. To see if other people have this before. Asking him about it-don't want him to think I'm crazy!lol if you have efound out what Causes This Can you please let me know? I have a suspicion it is a central nervous system glitch but don't know for sure. Thanks A million!

That's not right. You really need to see a doctor about that.

  • wow how horrible i had a recent "episode" so i know the feeling especially if the "back up" is blocked, if the nose is blocked like in the flu, thats a danger that hasnt happended to me but oh . maybe wash your nose and sinuses out once a month then later twice a year to get rid of the sneeze at least

I have never heard of this, to be honest. I have heard of similar phenomena though. For instance: Hiccup and sneeze at the same time, hiccup and cough at the same time.
The living body is a complex collection of parts and it should not ruled out entirely.

Did you have to have surgery on your esophagus, trachea or neck? I know when my father had surgery on his neck and the doctors had to move the esophagus to work around, it has caused him issues with swallowing. He cannot swallow his meal too fast, it causes him trouble if he does. A signal from the esophagus to the pyloric valve (top valve to the stomach) is confused and the valve does not open. This causes the chewed and swallowed food to become trapped in the esophagus where it gags him and leads to vomiting.

It could be a misfiring signal but sadly that sounds like something that will be terribly hard to diagnose. It will probably require a neurologist to figure out the cause, nature and solution to that. Talk to a doctor. Of course he might be wondering why you need to vomit in the first place though.
