Is it normal to write lyrics this way?

I am a musician and I often write my lyrics from another point of view, not necessarily a single person in perticular but more of some entity other than me for example a corrupt politician or a stuffed animal or an abused child I base off a story I've heard.

People will then comment that my lyrics are expressing how I feel when it's not, for example I wrote a song in the governments view encouraging people to support their corruption and kill themselves which seemed to bother some people who thought those were my opinions.

Is it normal that I write lyrics where I am not necessarily expressing my opinions, but write in first person from a third persons prespective.

Whether or not it is I'm not changing how I write but I am curious to what people think about this matter.

  • You can know a needle's eye
    Or a hungry baby's cry
But no one knows that demons dance alone

    Silver linings came and went
    When I was an innocent
    Never knowing demons dance alone

    But somehow I was seduced
    And my innocence reduced
By a demon that became my own

    Knowingly I followed it
Took the hook and swallowed it
But then I found it dancing in my home

    Terrified I tried to quit
But now I need the taste of shit
Like a dancing demon needs a home

I had hoped to fill my years with
    More than melancholy tears
But the demon makes me dance alone

      • It's from a "Residents" album, I think most of the undertones were about 9/11 and dealing with loss.

They also supposedly invented music video.

I think it's pretty cool that you can write from a different perspective. I can't write lyrics for crap haha. But poetry has never been a problem for me.

There's a song written from the perspective of a lawnmower. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1tFQMjc-IE

I suppose it must be normal.
