Is it normal to write 10x better than you speak?

I don't speak how I write and never have. I never use larger vocabulary or articulate myself well but when I write, it's entirely different. It's as if everything I have inside comes splashing out onto the paper and many people are in disbelief that I write how I do. Some people close to me have even thought I was flat-out lying to them and that I couldn't possibly write well at all.

Is this normal? Here's an example of how I speak:

My Mom: Take a look at my co-workers Facebook. She's dating some really strange man.

Me: Wow, that's like so like weird. I can't believe it.

My Mom: Look at what she wrote. She's posting photos of her life and bragging about everything from what she's eating to where she's visiting on vacation. Look, she wrote, "I can't believe I was asked to help out with --- fundraiser. I'm glad they asked me because I'm definitely the best person to ask for this with my gift with working with people. They'll be lucky to have me. I'm sure I'll be asked back next year too, can't wait. "

Me: Well she's like a 12 year old and she's like obsessed with herself you know.
Me inside(something like): Well with her having a 12 year old mentality and being an egotistical bitch, that makes sense.

Am I completely strange?

I think it's kinda cool to be like that. Many ppl aren't good at neither.

Well, when you write stuff down you have more time to think about it before you submit it.

This is a quality that a lot of introverts have. Maybe you're an introvert? :)

    • Maybe. Do you genuinely fear using larger vocabulary and structuring a sentence properly? I actually do. I fear sounding too douchey and fake so I actively avoid using larger vocabulary. It's as if I mentally and physically can't sound articulate (unless I absolutely have to) no matter how much I want to.

You can learn to speak as well as you write.
Since you are already able to write fluently then I'd suggest pausing before speaking, think about how you will respond verbally, then speak.
    Practice makes perfect ;)

    • Lol but I also fear speaking properly! It's as if I can't do that as she'd think I'm trying to be an arrogant biatch.

Speaking correctly and writing well is a sign of intelligence ;)
If you could say the right words to her, she will think that you're a romantic gentleman, she'll be washed away by your flowing words :)

I write better, because my mind slows down to the speed of my fingers. When I speak I feel as though my mouth cannot keep up with my thoughts. It's frustrating, however I assume is fairly normal. Some people have excellent speaking skills, whereas other people excel in writing. We're diverse in our talents and communication.

  • I wriite better too because I can take time to type out my thoughts and organize them properly. I dont write good on paper either. Just text because I can move the words around and form my ideas like a puzzle.

When you have more time to think about what you are saying, it will always come out better.
